Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Luna.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nick. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I actually started in Photography in high school. My grandfather worked at Eastman Kodak in Windsor up until about ten years ago and I would say he was the biggest influence on me getting into Photography. He sold me my first digital SLR camera in 2015, the camera at that point was already 11 years old. I started out doing landscape and city scape Photography before I moved into portrait Photography in 2017, and in June of this year, I finally got a studio to work out of.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I actually work 50 hours a week as an automotive technician. Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, so one of my biggest struggles has been balancing work, Photography and home life. It’s led to plenty of sleepless nights editing a shoot or developing film and tintypes.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
PinkHat Photography was officially founded in 2017 when I started shooting portraits seriously. I specialize in fantasy portraits and fine art portraits but I’m most proud of my film and alternative process work. I’m the only dry plate portrait Photographer I know of in northern Colorado and I am always trying to push the limits of my abilities as well as the limits of the medium I’m using. This year is the first year I’ve begun to apply my fantasy portrait styles with cosplay Photography, working with local cosplayers in the northern Colorado area to build a portfolio.
What were you like growing up?
I was a little shit growing up! I had no interest in school, I found it boring and too rigid. I just wanted to read and write and do my own thing as often as I could, some of that had beld into my adult life, in college I was just as bored with the rigid classes and only really enjoyed the hands on classes with more freedoms. This hands on outside the box push is what really got me into alternative process and film Photography. I have to physically make the dry plates before a shoot and develop them and my film.
