Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Giron.
Nikki, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always wanted to be a musician, ever since I could remember. When my grandma introduced Elvis Presley to me, I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do! I remember writing songs when I was little, I played the piano. I wasn’t the ‘best’ or a prodigy by any means but I absolutely loved it. Throughout middle school, I played saxophone and continued on until today. My career really started, I’d say my freshman year of college. I started writing ‘real’ songs when I was a Junior in High School, I did a 2-week music industry program through CU Denver, where I really finished my first song and learned more about songwriting.
Moving forward, I joined a band and continued with school. I started gigging a lot with the band and with a duo partner at the time. I played mostly jazz then, playing places such as La Cour. Now I play with my boyfriend, when we weren’t in a Pandemic, we played many many places almost every weekend. I started recording music about five years ago, but I would say now is where I’m truly discovering my sound. With my passion for music and vintage things, I’ve really found a great spot to express myself. I put out an EP that isn’t really me anymore, but my most recent music video and song release I produced myself. I didn’t think I could do it but I did! It’s been a journey that I am still continuing on, but I love creating. And I love music.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not at all, I struggle badly with generalized anxiety where I can barely do anything. I doubt myself quite often, question why I even do it if no one cares. But then I think about all those who support me. I’m still on a journey to complete trust in myself and my music. I’ve had many ups and downs, bad shows. In fact, the other day I went to make a cover and I was getting upset because my voice didn’t sound as good as I wanted it to. I compare myself quite often, but I’m working on it every day. I can now say I am doing well, a lot better than I was and I’m excited to continue with this journey. As a music career has many ups and downs, I just work through them and persevere.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
So as I said before, I’m a singer-songwriter and a saxophone player. I think what makes me unique really is the fact that I am a singer who can pull out the saxophone!! I do mostly R&B and Pop now, but I’m putting out a small project with jazz standards. I absolutely love history and love music with a connection to it and a story behind it. I’d say recently I’m most proud of the music video that I put out. I worked really hard on it, along with the people I worked with to do it. Overall I’m really proud of how far I’ve come, and regardless of the problems in the self-doubt that I faced, I continue to work every day and never give up.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
All my teachers at CU Denver, including Owen Kortz and Paul Musso, have been huge in influencing my passion for music and my education in it. Also, my friends have been huge support streaming my music, buying my merch, coming to my shows etc. they’ve been amazing. I also have to give a lot of credit to my mom and dad, who support me big time. Also, my good friend Matt Meacham has been a huge visually creative force in my music and he’s the one who actually did my most recent music video. I’m still on the roadway to success but I also want to think Colorado public TV who put me on sounds on 29th and my friend Chelsea who referred me to them!! Also, shout out to Kim who has to encourage me and also helps me get this interview!
