Today we’d like to introduce you to Niko Delarosa.
Niko, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For the past 14 years, I have been working with Denver’s own DJ KTONE. When I first started working with him, I was his driver for the annual DJ KTone birthday bash. I drove him and His guests from event to event. After a couple of years, I became more involved in the creative process and also his Executive Assistant. Being involved in the business side of the KTONE brand was the catalyst for me starting something on my own. Mean Girl Styling was a styling brand when first launched. I represented models but I also style them and a few other people in the entertainment field. It paused for a few years because of my main Career which is Criminal Justice. I started as a mental health counselor and then moved on to become a Correction Officer. In 2016 I relaunched Mean Girl Styling by hosting my birthday during 420 weekend at Cold Crush and Introduced my Ladies to the Denver entertainment Culture. My ladies have done videos, fashion shows, print and even hosting events. My niece who was one of my ladies has signed a deal with a pretty well-known company that I cannot reveal. It was hard at first because modeling teams became the thing that the following year. Even though business slowed down, we continued to book and a few of my girls did shows and videos. Mean Girl Styling isn’t just a modeling management business no longer. I help with coordinating events such as parties and fashion shows with local promoters. I also am now a sponsor as well featured on several events. I’m more than just some chick who does parties and a representative of lovely girls. I am also a part of organizations that help out our community. Thanksgiving in July is something I have supported for two years as well as mommas who hustle which my friends run and I help. I am also a huge advocate for Mental Health, especially Suicide prevention. I’m very low key with a lot of my work I do because I do it for love, not the recognition. You see people show up to events for a photo opportunity to make people think they are making a difference. As for working as a Correction Officer full time. I work with Juvenile Offenders. I love it and I need to help kids. I have kids myself. I love doing both. Don’t get me wrong but I love helping people more. My goal is for Mean Girl Styling to be put on the map and have some foundation to be a part of what we also do. I run it alone. My sister helps me out sometimes when my load gets too heavy, especially with a full time job. Mean Girl Styling is my business but helping others is my passion.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It gets hard sometimes. It’s hard to book everyone. Artists may want certain girls all the time because they saw them in another video. It sucks when you can include all your girls. Challenges are also life changes with my models. They get pregnant or move and sometimes want something new. I also sometimes feel unsupported. The entertainment business is very fickle at times.
Tell us more about your work.
Mean Girl Styling is a family. The ladies root for one another. They help each other. We specialize in so many things. Booking, hosting, event coordinating, consulting on events and print work I’m mostly known for my events with KTone. I’m most proud that we continue to do things, whether low key or big events. We always stay busy. What set is apart is that we welcome models of all shapes and sizes. We push everyone in the city even if it’s not anyone from our camp. We support the culture a hundred percent.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I feel like my association with certain people in the city has given me more opportunities than others. I feel lucky to have built the relationships I have with some elite people.
