Today we’d like to introduce you to Patiopapi.
Patiopapi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in San Jose CA and was raised all throughout the state but spent most of my time in the Monterey Bay area. I moved to Colorado in 2012 when I was 20 years old after stacking up whatever cash I could. The move wasn’t exactly planned but I knew I needed to make a change. I started making music right around the end of my senior year of high school but didn’t take it seriously until I made the move to CO. The first job I landed out here was working at a warehouse and the friends I made there started to show me around the city for the first time. Our first night out was to a local hip hop show that was headlining a group called Prime Element who not only became friends of mine but became the pivotal point in my music career.
During this time, I met a collective of artists whose group name was Soul City. The group consisted of DJs, Rappers, Producers, etc. and was led by DJ/Producer Mikey Fresh who officially made me Soul City’s newest member. Although most of Soul City has moved on from currently making music or any new projects, the early years were filled with incredible events, great stories and unforgettable memories. Everything that took place between then and now is obviously too much to type down, but every one of those ups and downs was exactly what was needed in order for me to be where I’m at today.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
To keep it simple. I had to deal with homelessness, fallouts with people I trusted, having no money or income, one terrifying medical scare, battle with depression and self-medicating. These days though with how everything has turned out, you wouldn’t have guessed I was ever at such a low point.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a music producer who used to be known as DJ Paradox but has since been changed to patiopapi. My range of sound is anywhere from Hip Hop (old school/new school), RnB, Dance/Electronic, Neo Soul and even blends of Rock. What I’m proud of the most in regards to my music is my growth and my want to be better than whatever I did the previous day. What most people know me for are my remixes. I started making remixes almost as soon as I started making music because I wanted to hear vocals on my work but I didn’t know any rappers, singers or songwriters. What I feel sets me apart from others is both my versatility and sound. I never want to be branded as a specific type of producer or as an artist that sounds like anybody else.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As of right now, I am currently working on a project with a friend of mine. We are still in the very early stages but we are already building concepts and looking for this project to be more than just an album to listen to. A big change I am working on are plans on a new live performance set and tackling the world of songwriting and directing. I also want to start composing music for more videos this next year than I had before. I was recently featured on a CBS Denver news segment about the lowriding culture in Denver and ever since I have been itching to do more work like that.
