Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Angone.
Paul, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I felt lost and a complete failure. That’s where my writing career started. Alone in a hotel room, traveling for a job I didn’t want, wondering out loud to the walls, “Is this really it?”
As an author and speaker my passion is offering truth, hope, and hilarity for anyone asking “What now?”. I specifically focus on writing to twentysomethings with my books “101 Secrets For Your Twenties” and “101 Questions You Need to Ask in Your Twenties” because it’s a decade where you’re making huge life decisions, yet there’s a lot of confusion and ambiguity to wade through.
Has it been a smooth road?
It took me eight years of rejection and re-writes before I would land my first book deal with a publisher. I almost gave up and had to start over many different times along the way. It was only through creating my website allgroanup.com that I begin to build my audience and viral momentum through blog posts like “21 Secrets For Your Twenties” and “25 Signs You’re Having a Quarter Life Crisis.”
Through the process, I learned that failure doesn’t ruin your story. Failure helps you write it. In every story we love, the hero always experiences an “all is lost” moment before the dramatic rise. I believe the same is true for our stories.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am known for being one of the leading voices in the nation to, and for, twentysomethings. I’ve spoken around the nation at countless universities, as well as business conferences and corporate events as I help leaders better understand, engage, and retain the next generation. I’ve also seen my books sold across all Target retail stores, Sam’s Club, Hudson airport bookstores, Barnes and Noble, etc.
I’ve been writing to, speaking to, and researching about this generation for over a decade and studied the effects of “emerging adulthood” through my Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership. I’ve received thousands of emails from twentysomethings along the way, sharing their story, so I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of what today’s twentysomethings are really going through.
And it’s the emails I receive from readers about how much my books have encouraged and inspired them that keeps me going. It’s been an incredible honor as well to see my books translated for India, Russia, Thailand, Vietnam, and even Iran. It’s truly amazing to me that my message has even reached across cultures and continents.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that Denver feels like the central hub to the United States and is a vibrant city of economic growth, creativity, and culture. I love the distinct seasons we get to experience and that a rejuvenating trip to the mountains is only minutes away.
With the growth that we’ve experienced, I think we will continue to face challenges on how to best handle that growth.
