Meet Paul Schiff of Circular Threads in Frisco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Schiff.

Paul, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Circular Threads is a Frisco, Colorado-based business that re-purposes and upcycles unwanted, pre-consumer and post-consumer waste materials into new products. We got started upcycling while looking for solutions to the many waste streams that we encounter on a daily basis.

Our mission is to source waste materials that are destined for the landfill and to refashion them into new products fit for the circular economy. We collect these excess waste materials from the Denver area and in Summit County and transform them into new products for people and pets. Because our eco-friendly products are made with waste materials, rather than virgin materials, we are able to conserve the earth’s precious resources, rather than depleting them.

When you no longer need one of our products, you can return it, where it will be upcycled once again into another product or responsibly recycled. Our closed-loop manufacturing process is designed to reduce waste to a minimum and keep products in service as long as possible.

Has it been a smooth road?
When you source virgin materials from China, you can purchase as much as you want, in any color you want. When you source post-consumer and pre-consumer waste materials, you can’t choose your color, nor can you choose how much you are able to purchase or collect. You are limited to the excess materials that you can creatively source. It is said that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” When we source our materials, we know that it may become a unique item that is never made in that color or style again. That’s what makes it both fun and challenging.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Circular Threads story. Tell us more about the business.
Our company creates products from waste materials that are no longer wanted or useful in their original purpose. Our process of upcycling enables us to keep these materials out of the landfill, where they decompose and emit harmful greenhouse gasses.

All of our products are Made in the USA at our small micro-factory. After we collect the waste materials, they are sorted and cleaned. Then they are cut into patterns and sewn in our factory. We work with post-consumer blue jeans, old sailboat sails, decommissioned climbing and nautical rope, and fabric made from recycled water bottles.

We design our products for the circular economy. We look at the end of life of the product and imagine what it will be when you no longer want it. Please help us keep our products from ending up in the landfill by returning them to us when you no longer want or need them. If you or your company has excess waste materials that you would like us to repurpose, please drop us a call.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
There is a huge need for company’s that are able to tackle the massive waste that industry creates. The current fashion industry employs a linear model, referred to as Take, Make, Waste. This model takes raw materials from the earth and makes their products in overseas factories relying on low labor costs. Once the consumer no longer needs the product, it is landfilled, rather than recycled, because the overseas factories don’t want them back. We see the industry of recycling post-consumer waste growing in the next 5-10 years, as consumers look to be more responsible in their purchases.
