Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Whitacre.
Paul, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After moving from Indianapolis to Denver in 2016 to pursue rock climbing, I “accidentally” found myself in the music scene. The stars aligned perfectly and I was introduced to Mark Cunningham and Chase Perry, who would eventually become the bandmates that helped me form “Whitacre.” We spent years touring with some of our favorite bands, garnering 1 million+ streams to date and playing the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater.
Unfortunately, Covid-19 canceled 20+ tour dates and has been one of the hardest seasons to endure. The best thing that has come from less shows is the ability to record from home and release music a lot more frequently. I’ve started writing and releasing a lot of music under my solo project as a result of not knowing when live music will return.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being in a band has been one of the most fulfilling but grueling experiences of my life. Before I started playing in Whitacre, I loved to research my favorite bands and learn everything I could about their story. With that said, there is nothing that could have prepared me for the challenges that came with actually being in a band.
From being robbed on tour, to vans breaking down to tough moments on stage in front of hundreds of people, it’s been a really long road. I wouldn’t trade the experiences for anything!
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
Now that I am venturing off more into my solo project, I’m finding myself refocusing on what initially made me passionate about playing music. Artists have such a unique opportunity to be brutally honest in their storytelling through music. Things that would be extremely uncomfortable to talk about in a 1-1 conversation suddenly become accepted (and celebrated) in songwriting.
My goal is that people who hear my music can pick up on the messages of hope through the darkest times. There is always hope.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
That’s a tough question… It’d probably change every time someone asked, but the first thing that comes to mind is when my family lived in Sacramento, CA. I used to be able to skateboard to school everyday and I thought that was the coolest thing in the world.
