Today we’d like to introduce you to Paula Vargas.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Paula. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was blessed to know exactly what I wanted to do when “I grew up.” As a teenager, I looked forward to watching Meet the Press! Watching and listening to the political debates.
During my college years at Metropolitan State University of Denver, my journalism professors encouraged me to take advantage of internships! After completing each one, I’d walk away more and more convinced that journalism was the right path for me. No talking me out of it! My senior year (in college), I earned a position with Univision as its managing assignment desk editor. This began a 15-year career in journalism.
In 2014, as social media became the primary source for businesses to develop and grow its online visibility, I recognized the opportunity to transition into an evolving market and utilize my background in storytelling to create video content for business. I leaped into freelance full-time. Freelancing for newsrooms while juggling clients who were requesting marketing videos. One (client) led to a second, third, and additional referrals began to come in. And a few years later, leading me to where I am today. I continue to enjoy, grow, and love everything about this industry. I still get excited when I earn a new client! Create a new project!
Throughout this process, entrepreneurship has introduced me to being comfortable in the uncomfortable zone.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest fear was leaving a safe, employed life (health insurance, steady income, and benefits) and leap right into the unknown, uncertain arena of freelance. Fear aside, my road wasn’t as difficult as some. The relationships I cultivated during my journalism years developed and transitioned into some of my best clients making it a little easier. In the beginning, I was certainly sleep-deprived. Learning to meet the demands of the paperwork behind the scenes, meeting the demands of each project, learning how to price, budget small to large projects and teams, purchasing equipment, programs. These are all rough patches that have led me to be better for myself, clients, and those I collaborate with.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Producing Visions story. Tell us more about the business.
I consider myself a filmmaker creating, crafting, and producing client’s visions- be it a corporation, nonprofit, or small businesses- specializing in compelling visual storytelling. I’m uber proud to have worked with my alma mater, on political campaigns influencing and encouraging voter turnout, nonprofits, and small businesses working for social change.
