Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Bailey.
Rachel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up listening to great music. My father was a singer/songwriter. He toured in Europe and I grew up watching him record and perform. I was so inspired to sing watching him do his thing and become rather popular from his music. I’ve always loved to sing but my love for songwriting came about during a very dark time of my childhood life. Although I was inspired to sing by my father, my father had a dark past as well. My mother and I were abused by my mentally ill father. After my mother left her marriage with my father, I suffered from PSTD. After getting mental help through a therapist, I fell in love with writing poems. It was a way for me to escape my problems, feel heard, and feel free of all of my worries. It was very hard to communicate my feelings but when I wrote poetry, I felt like I could be open with anyone.
Combining my love for music and now poetry then sparked the fame of songwriting. When I was 16, I began to explore the idea of becoming a music artist. I use to sing back up for a reggae band in Raleigh, North Carolina. Every once in a while the band would give me a solo to sing my heart out and I fell in love with performing. I moved back to Colorado about six years ago and became serious about perusing a music career about three years ago when I met my Manager. Having to start over with a fresh start on my own without the guidance of my father, I’ve performed and opened for artists like Ella Mai and Justine Skye. Performed at major festivals such as The Taste of Colorado, the Westword Music Festival (also a nominee for 2019 Best R&B Artist of the Year), Juneteenth Festival, and Denver’s 420 Rally. My song “Down” featuring Trev Rich is currently the number 2 most requested song on Denver’s number 1 Hip Hop and R&B radio station, KS107.5, on regular rotation.
Since then I’ve also been featured in the Source Magazine. As a military brat, Denver has really given me an amazing platform to grow. The support I’ve received here has truly blown me away. I’m so thankful for the embracement the city of Denver has blessed me with and I’m excited to touch other cities and spread my message about self-love.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road definitely hasn’t been smooth. There have been a lot of ups and downs. I’ve received a lot of no’s, “you’re not good enough”s, “it will never happen”s. I’ve faced rumors and even ended relationships within my family. But I’m a firm believer that you attract who you are. As a young girl, I was only beginning to find myself. And as I grew more mature my reality of my true self began to become so clear for me. So as people began to part ways out of my life, I began to attract and cross paths with people like myself.
And I’m so proud to say that my fans, my Bae’s, are so beautiful, strong, unique, sweet, and unapologetically themselves. I love them SO MUCH and I’m so thankful to have the opportunity to inspire and encourage them to be examples of living life to the fullest through self love no matter your sex, race, or sexuality. That is my purpose. I’ve also learned a lot about myself through failure. Failure has taught me to become stronger, smarter, more resilient, and patient. I’m still learning and this journey has been a TRIP. But I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned so far along the way.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a singer, songwriter, and performing artist. I’m most proud to say that my journey has been 100% organic. It’s been a beautiful journey so far. What sets me apart from others is my story, my journey. Everyone’s journey is different and that’s what makes this experience we call life so amazing.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Wow. So many! My manger Exavior from MpactRecords Management has been an amazing support. He handles most of the business which allows me to be an artist. Our communication is impeccable. He’s like my brother. My family has been very supportive. They also text me or call me to tell me how proud of me they are. My mom has always encouraged me to stay true to myself, be kind to myself, and live the life I’ve always wanted as long as I did it through love. My uncle, chef and owner of the restaurant I work at has NEVER denied any requests to take off for any performances I’ve had. My boyfriend has been to almost every one of my performances, front row, singing every word to my songs while recording my performances. He’s also my fitness trainer and has helped me tremendously with my physical and mental health.
My band has been there for me through thick and thin. They trust me and we vibe so well together. It never feels like work because we have so much fun together. My dancers have taught me to become a better performer and dancer. We’re like sisters. They’re so sweet and work too hard. Despite the past my father and I shared, he played a huge roll in my success as well. I’m not sure if I ever would been inspired to perform or write music if it wasn’t for him. I learned a lot about music business and marketing with him as well. And I’ll always be thankful for that. And I can’t forget my fans, my Bae’s. My Bae’s have kept me motivated to create and spread my message and story. I literally cry every message I receive from my fans about how my music and shows have changed their lives for the better. There’s nothing more in this world that I want than to be able to change people’s lives to become more self-loving.
