Today we’d like to introduce you to Randi Wood.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Randi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up in Castle Rock, horses were always a big part of my life and I knew from a young age that I wanted to build my career around them. After graduating from vet school at Colorado State University I spent several years working in Arizona then Ohio. I enjoyed this time and I learned a lot about practicing medicine in the real world, but in my heart, I always wanted to come back to Colorado.
This year, in 2019, I decided it was time to come home to Colorado. After exploring my options and debating the pro and cons I decided to take the plunge and open my veterinary practice, Redtail Equine. Starting my own business was intimidating, but it was the right choice for me, allowing me to practice veterinary medicine my way with the highest standards of care and ethics.
Today, I get to spend my days working with horses while knowing that I am doing the best for my clients and their four-legged friends. It is amazing to see how deep the human-animal bond can be and to be the one that gets to help nurture that relationship by helping humans understand their horses and helping horses be the best athletes they can be.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been smoother than expected in a lot of ways, but there are always challenges. Veterinary medicine is a highly regulated industry and there is no central location with answers to all of the rules and regulations that need to be followed as the owner of a practice. Luckily I have a great peer network, including people that had been through this process themselves and were willing to take time out of their schedules to answer questions, even when I called late at night.
This is also a business largely driven by word-of-mouth and there were some struggles initially with how to get my name out there and get the ball rolling. Now that people have started to recognize Redtail Equine, I have been amazed by the amount of support and the number of referrals I have received. It is a great feeling every time a new client calls and says a friend told them I was amazing and now they want to have me out to see their horses.
Tell us more about your business.
Redtail Equine Veterinary Service is a full service mobile veterinary clinic dedicated to providing the best care available to horses, donkeys, and mules. My main interests are working with athletic horses so they can perform at their best and helping horse owners breed the next generation of equine athletes. While these are the areas I enjoy focusing on, I always strive to provide the best all-around care for all of my patients from basic preventative care to emergency response.
I also have a passion for client education which sets me apart from a lot of other practices. I am never too busy to answer a client’s questions about their horses or explain the reasons why a treatment works or why a test is necessary. I also enjoy teaching and often seek out opportunities to give talks on various subjects at local tack shops and to horsey groups such as 4-H and Pony Club.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have been very lucky when it comes to my support network. I would not be where I am today without the support of my family and the amazing friends I have made in the veterinary field. They have stood beside me when I needed a shoulder to lean on and been there to answer my questions on everything from how to start on LLC to how to keep track of my inventory. Without them, this would have been a much more uphill battle.
