Meet Dr. Rebecca Bub of Pure Family Medicine in West Littleton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Rebecca Bub.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Bub. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Pure Family Medicine was founded after years of working in the traditional medical system as an employed physician and acknowledging that that system is broken and not working for patients or physicians. I knew that there had to be a better way to care for patients (and myself) but it took me many years to figure it out. Personally, during that time I was suffering from moral injury, I was forced to see far too many patients, limited to arbitrary time restraints dictated by administrators, and spending too much time on paperwork and electronic medical records instead of caring for people. The American healthcare system is neither a physician nor a patient-centered.

At some point, I was introduced to the model of Direct Primary Care, a growing grassroots movement by physicians to bring healthcare back to its roots of actually caring for patients without all the waste. Upon learning that this model was an option, it was a no brainer. I began planning for my escape. The goal- Build a practice with low overhead, in order to keep prices affordable, and care simple. The model- Patients pay for their care directly in the form of a monthly membership, think “Netflix of medicine.”

Once they are a member of the practice, all primary care is included, unlimited office visits, a modern approach such as 24/7 access to call or text their doctor, and the comfort of knowing our goals are aligned. I work with my patients to keep them healthy. I don’t answer to corporations or insurance companies, and I don’t profit from ordering labs, referrals, or imaging. So simple, but so difficult for many to understand in a nation that has become reliant on a broken system.

I built out my space, broke my relationships with insurance companies, and started seeing patients. They save their insurance for the big things (similar concept to car insurance homeowners insurance, etc.) and pay directly for their primary care. Most save money despite the membership fee because they are paying REAL prices, not those inflated by the “systems”, and ALL get a physician who knows them, spend time with them, is available for small and big questions, and is HAPPY to be practicing medicine the way it should be. I carry 1/5 of the number of patients as I did incorporate medicine, and probably 1/10th of the amount of time on unnecessary paperwork and data gathering for third parties. It’s a win-win. Everyone is happy, everyone is healthier. Including me!

Today, I am almost six months into having my doors open at Pure Family Medicine. The practice is growing quickly as people learn about us, and we are continuing to improve our services. Currently, I do everything from answering phones, doing vitals, drawing blood, to dispensing medications (at our in house pharmacy- also wholesale costs for patients). I will need to hire help as we grow, but I will likely continue to do all of the above as I love spending this time and getting to know all of my patients.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has mostly been smooth! Of course, with any new endeavor, there is a lot to learn. Looking back, are there things I would change, of course, but nothing major! In my case, being a business owner is a whole new world. But I am continuing to learn and improve along the way, which is fun!

I am a board-certified Family Medicine physician. I am the owner and founder of Pure Family Medicine, where I practice traditional family medicine in a Direct Primary Care model. I joke that this is a “new model”, but in reality, it is “old fashioned medical care.” I carry a smaller patient panel so I can offer longer appointments, same or next-day availability, modern communication such as texting or calling and have a real, long-term relationship with my patients.

If something does happen medically, they know and trust me to help them navigate their care. I am able to offer this level of service because it is a membership model where patients pay directly, without the burden of third-party payers and inflated prices in the insurance model. They save their insurance for the big things and actually get great comprehensive care in my practice. We offer individual and family memberships, as well as contract directly with small businesses who want to save money on health benefits while providing their employees with amazing healthcare.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are looking forward to spreading the word about this model, so that people can learn that great medical care DOES exist, for an affordable price. Ideally, as my panel grows, I will hire an additional physician to build their own personal panel of patients in the same model. We continue to nourish relationships with like-minded medical professionals in order to offer our patients the best possible all-around care. Someday, I would love to have an in house nutritionist, PT, counselor, and more!
