Today we’d like to introduce you to Risa Scott.
Risa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have a pretty diverse background and traveled sort of an odd path that eventually led me to where I am now and what I do.
I went to undergrad as a Civil Engineer and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute followed by a few years working as a project manager in the field. After some time, I grew restless and moved from the Virginia DC Area to Boulder Colorado.
It was here that my interests really started to branch out. I worked several places doing numerous different jobs in small business and startups. But it was in acting and film that I started to really find my ‘people’. After a few years I was working consistently as an actor, was learning photography and making websites for other creatives and performers. The idea for my business blossomed from there.
I moved to LA and made a big push to find my niche and my identity as a business. I worked for other small businesses and really got to know other artists and craftspeople. When I moved North to the Bay, I’d started to think that being nomadic while doing this kind of work would be ideal, so I began moving things in that direction.
The business was moving forward, people liked my work, my photography identity and style started to become more solidified and unique as it’s own thing. I researched living on the road, eventually bought a Toyota RV and drove it back to New York to begin the build.
It’s been about two years now of building the RV and really honing in on where my business is headed. I’ve evolved quite a bit as an artist and my experience with other small businesses, artists and craftspeople all over the country has helped me create something that will make it easier for them to do what they do and bring it to the world. I want to tell their stories, and I love that I can travel perpetually doing that.
I’m still an actor, now I’ve moved into producing some of my own work as well. The RV is mostly complete and I live comfortably with my dog, Bread. I have a wonderful nation-wide network and it’s very fulfilling to be completely mobile and meet new artists and people doing wonderful things everywhere I go.
Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road; there were many, many struggles. Relationships, money, bringing in consistent money as a freelancer and small business owner, imposter syndrome, the RV build itself was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. I had people be very supportive of this project, but also people who were suddenly very negative about me doing it. That’s hard to push through sometimes, it’s hard enough to psych yourself up for a project of that magnitude, but even more so when someone is in your ear telling you it’s crazy. Same with starting and building a business. I struggle with workflow sometimes, balancing the hours it takes to run a business with wanting some time for friends, family and relationships. Add to that being on the road!
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
RF Scott Imagery is a unique approach to helping small business. The goal is to help artists, craftspeople, creatives and other small businesses create everything they need to get their work seen, develop a brand and market themselves.
Notably, I prioritize the concept that they can be spending more time doing what they love and less time dabbling in a bunch of professions (like content creation, web design, social media, and marketing). They can get all that in one place, from other artists, just like them, who are passionate about helping them succeed. I try to create resources to keep us any-budget-friendly and I give them the tools to do as much of the maintenance going forward as they think they can handle to keep costs down. We offer them the opportunity to start small and grow into their businesses as well, providing guidance and advice when needed.
Personally, I’m known mostly for photography and web design. Over the years I’ve created a network of artists who offer many other services under my umbrella so that we can give artists the opportunity to get everything they need in one place. So now we offer everything from brand creation, logos and graphics, video production, photography, web design, content creation, and social media to business guidance and more.
I think what sets us/me apart from our ‘competition’ is the flexibility to work with small start-ups and brands as well as the passion to see these businesses succeed. I have a passion for people’s stories and seeing them pursuing what lights them up. I want to make that possible for them by providing any tools I can.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Denver is by far my favorite city. I love that there are so many areas with unique character. I love that I can see those beautiful mountains every day. I love the artist community here, it’s so supportive and the city itself encourages them and gives them places to play and show what they can do.
Maybe the thing I like least about the city are people here who don’t appreciate it. They take it for granted.
