Meet Ryan, Neal, and Russell Hays of Hays Market in Johnstown and Berthoud

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan, Neal, and Russell Hays.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hays Market was started in Johnstown in 1929 by Thurman and Louisa Hays. It was then run by their son Chet Hays, In the early 70’s Rick (Chet’s Son) and his wife Sally would continue on the family business. In 1996 Rick and Sally built a new store in Johnstown. During the late 90’s Ryan, Neal and Russell Hays (All sons of Rick and Sally) would return from college to run the family business and become the 4th generation to run/own Hays Market. In 2001 the Hays family purchased a store in Berthoud. Ryan, Neal and Russell continue to run the stores currently.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Over 90 years in business, we’ve been through a lot of good times and bad times, but the communities we are located in have always been supportive to our business.

Hays Market – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Hays Market specializes in customer service. We’re small-town owners with small-town values. Our customers are our neighbors, friends, and family. Our Meat Department only sells Certified Angus Beef, makes 14 homemade sausages, and we still grind our own hamburger. Our Produce Department has specialties like homemade dips, salsas, and other items. Local produce is featured throughout the year. We also have a huge produce sale every August featuring local produce. You can find local products and great variety throughout the store.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Being able to serve the communities of Johnstown, Milliken, and Berthoud for the past 91 years! Expanding and updating our stores to keep up with the changing times and being able to adapt to the needs of the communities.
