Meet Sabréna Roberts of CurlyMessyBun in Lone Tree

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabréna Roberts.

Sabréna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
CurlyMessyBun (the brand) was birthed on July 19th, 2018. There I was sitting in my bedroom, hair in a curly messy bun, & decided to start a podcast for no other reason than ‘just because’ – I honestly never thought anyone would listen. On August 26th, 2019 I then started my YouTube which is a branch off my podcast.

The name came solely from my main hairstyle of choice & nothing more. My entire vision for my podcast was to give a voice to those who don’t have one or are simply too scared to live in their truth. I’ve discussed things from mental illness in the black community, challenges I’ve overcome in my life, relationships, & so much more.

Social media has given people a false image of the world, and I want to change that. I want people to know they don’t have to look perfect every second of the day, live an amazing gram-worthy life, or only show “the good stuff”. Now, this isn’t to say you should post every downfall or every single detail of your life, but you shouldn’t fake it either.

It’s okay to not be okay and that’s what I want people to understand. I know there’s somebody out there that needs me – Whether it’s a little girl that hates her height and has weird curls like me, a grown woman that deals with insecurities caused my the false reality of social media, or somebody that just needs a laugh. I’m here for them. I’ve created a brand for the unseen and the unheard.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This hasn’t been a very smooth road for me at all. Whether it’s a lack of community support, resources, or just technical difficulties I feel as though I constantly face challenges. However, anything that comes easy isn’t usually worth it.

Another challenge I have faced is dealing with anxiety and depression. Some days are most definitely worse than others but keeping myself busy works the best. In the life of a creative, this can be a hard thing to deal with when you have multiple tasks at hand. I often find myself not wanting to create at all.. as if I want to completely give up. Then I realize that I can’t just give up on people that need me.

Alright – Tell us about your work. What should we know?
I am a Podcaster, Brand, and YouTuber – all still pretty small but the audience I have makes it worth it. My baby is my podcast, which is the voice of the brand. That’s where this whole journey began and that’s where people began to relate with me.

The second idea was merch. I once posted a shirt I made solely for myself on social media and people loved it. It was my first CMB shirt, and only had my logo (very large) on the back of it. From there I created my “Be A Voice Not An Echo” campaign as well as my “Give Me Roses While I Can Still Smell Them” campaign. Each more successful than the last.

My “Be A Voice Not An Echo” launch was inspired by the late Nipsey Hussle, who was murdered the day after my birthday. I was so inspired that I paid for WiFi on my flight back home to design and launch the shirts. The idea behind the saying is very simple – rather than just spitting out with the last person says, be a voice to create the change you wish to see.

While I was struggling the most with not having much local support I created my “Give Me Roses While I Can Still Smell Them” campaign. The design is a skeleton hand dropping roses. This to me symbolizes giving somebody acknowledgment and appreciation when it is far too late. I’ve lost a lot of people in my life, that were very dear to me, so I always let people know how much I appreciate them.

The last of my endeavors was my YouTube channel. For many years I wanted to join in the fun, but could never find the courage & made every possible excuse. I’ve had multiple people tell me I should tape the recordings of my podcast so I finally took the leap & put out my first video. With everything I do, I want to encourage, empower, & enlighten others. I’m not perfect by any means, but I feel as though I was given a very special talent of maintaining my authenticity. This is something people really lack in the age of social media, thus CurlyMessyBun being “where reality meets social media”

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mother without a doubt. Although she doesn’t usually know what I’m talking about, I use her as a soundboard quite often or go to her with small victories. She’s not subscribed to neither my Podcast or YouTube, but she supports in her own mom way (and also owns all my merch lol) so that means the world to me. I know a lot of people don’t have the support of their family, let alone their parents, so it’s amazing that I do.

My friends, specifically a close friend of mine that always allows me a safe space to vent. He often speaks sense into me when I cry that the sky is falling.

Most importantly the people I’ve never met who write me messages about how I’ve helped, inspired, and motivated them. Those messages mean the world to me – or anybody that truly supports what I’m doing.
