Meet Sabrina Harrison of Westminster, CO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Harrison.

Sabrina Harrison

Hi Sabrina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up my mother projected how she felt about her body onto mine. She made me diet from a very young age, and was constantly telling me I didn’t “need” sweets and treats she allowed my siblings to have. She gave me a very negative self image, and made me feel less worthy and lovable than my thin siblings. Society did not improve that! Women are given all sorts of messaging from a very young age about what the beauty standard is, and how they don’t match up. The result was me and so many other women playing small, trying to be invisible, and lacking the self confidence to go after their dreams. Fast forward to me finishing school and becoming a photographer, shooting anything and everything that came my way, trying to figure out what was niche? What was I particularly good at? My husband had his 40th birthday coming up, and wanted Boudoir photos for his gift. This made me super nervous, but I knew I was the only one who could give him this gift, so despite my insecurities, I got photos taken. I was honestly so shocked when I saw my photos. I felt a peace I hadn’t ever felt before. My head trash was taken out by boudoir! I felt so good about myself. So brave for doing something out of my comfort zone. I could see myself the way my husband sees me, with much kinder eyes than before. That shoot awakened my desire to help other women heal their relationship with their body, as boudoir has helped me! Now I will get back in front of the camera to work out new pose flows for clients and model new lingerie in the client closet. Each time I feel better and more confident than before.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Changing my mindset took a lot of work! Our neural pathways to be hateful to our bodies are carved deeply and from a young age. It takes a lot of positive self talk, mirror work, modeling and consciously sending positive messages to my body to undo so much harm.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in boudoir and branding photography. I love to help women shine both personally and professionally. I think what sets me apart from a lot of other photographers is that I am a people person. I recognize people are not in their comfort zone, and I’m here to hold space for whatever comes up. I am constantly looking for new inspiration and taking my art in new directions. Visually I am most proud of my outdoor boudoir. I think our connection with nature can be magical. What I am most proud of as a person is running a successful business as a creative.

What were you like growing up?
I have a big family, there were 4 kids, I shared the middle child status with my older brother. As 3 of 4 I learned to go with the flow. As a classic middle child I mediated conflicts between my siblings and my parents. I was loud and too much and was constantly given feedback to work on those things. I grew up mostly in a tree, or in the pool, when I wasn’t being super messy and creating art! I also had a giant curly afro and a voice that carried. I learned I was different from the crowd at a young age. It took me many years to love and appreciate those things about myself!
