Meet Sadie Fox Metter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sadie Fox Metter.

Sadie, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My name is Sadie Fox Metter. I’m a third-generation Coloradan, born and raised in Arvada. I have been crafting and sewing for as long as I can remember. Everything I know I learned from my mother and grandmother. I love to share this knowledge and my passion for fabric, design and sewing with others. Over the years I’ve taught classes at various shops and boutiques around town. Then, in 2015 I opened my own little sewing studio in North Denver called Sadie Fox Studio. There I learned how to run a small creative business while balancing family life. I’m a spouse and a mother of two creative teens. I’ve closed up that little shop and now run my creative business from home in Lakewood and online on Etsy.

Sewing and crafting overlap nicely with some of my other interests too, including care for the environment, buying handmade, supporting local creatives and the spiritual benefits of doing-it-yourself. I spent a decade living in New York City where I was inspired by high-end fashion designers, the garment district, street fashion, indie boutiques & flea markets.

In January 2017 I rented the space next door to my studio and opened a salon. It is called Fauna Salon. I don’t know a thing about using my scissors on hair, but my dear friend, Whitney Lindsay, does. So I brought her on board as the managing stylist and we rent out four other booths to four incredible creative businesswomen. I really wanted to create a space that is relaxing, inviting and healthy for our clients, as well as the stylists. We use all-natural hair and earth-friendly products.

I moved to Lakewood in late 2018 with my family. I’ve set up a creative studio where I design women’s garments, jewelry and sewing patterns. I love to create, decorate my mid-mod home, thrift shop, refinish old furniture, spend time with friends and support the other creative women in my life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No Way! There have been many challenges and obstacles. My family comes first. So you can imagine how a small business can suffer. I don’t have any regrets. It is just taking me a bit longer to get my little creative businesses where I want them to be. Also, I struggle with imposter syndrome big time. When I’m not paralyzed, by comparison, I’m paralyzed by wanting to make ALL THE THINGS.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Sadie Fox Studio is currently an online Etsy shop where I sell my creative makes. I specialize in jewelry and other accessories. I’m working on my own designs and sewing patterns as well. Both my designs and patterns are focused on size inclusivity and comfort so every woman can feel beautiful every day. Fauna Salon is a lovely hair salon in North Denver. I’m very proud of the space I created for them. It is an affordable space for the stylists to succeed in their small businesses and make their clients happy and beautiful.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Organization! Or maybe I should say time management. I feel like I juggle lots of responsibilities. I am constantly prioritizing my “to do” list. Also, learning how to say no. It’s taken me a long time, but if I’m asked to do something that doesn’t fit in with my family or business plans, I just say no. There is only so much time in a single day!
