Today we’d like to introduce you to Sage Calamari.
Sage, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The concept for BedStraw began years ago while I was living in the mountains of Colorado and I couldn’t find good quality, well designed, and reasonably priced home textiles. A few years later I received my Masters in Design and Merchandising with a specialization in sustainable interior textile products and design practices. After spending a year in Europe and witnessing countless environmental design strategies not utilized in the US, I was ready to embark on bringing good quality, well designed, reasonably priced, and sustainably made home textiles to the Boulder community.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been far from smooth, but my challenges have been mostly personal. I was eight months pregnant when I finally launched BedStraw and trying to balance a new business as a new mom was far from easy. Like most new businesses, I relied on word of mouth through networking, and being out in public was last thing I wanted to do the first months after having a baby. Now, two and a half years later I still find it hard to find the time and energy to get out, be “on” and sell, I am much more comfortable designing, researching, and spending time with my family.
Please tell us about BedStraw.
BedStraw is an online shop featuring sustainable textiles, and an interior design consultancy based out of Niwot, CO. Our goal is to provide sustainable products and design solutions that help consumers make safer textile choices for their homes, with less impact on the environment. Our online store is a carefully curated collection of factory and handmade sustainable textile goods produced both locally and globally.
Textile processing, manufacturing, use, and disposal all have tremendous impacts on our bodies, global communities, and the environment. The concept for BedStraw is fueled by a love of design and a desire to join the movement to change the interior textile industry. We are small but believe that small things can create big changes in people’s lives.
What sets us apart from most consumer-based businesses is our deep knowledge and understanding of the impacts of the materials used in the home. Through that knowledge, we have developed holistic strategies to create a space that is beautiful, safe for our families, and has a gentler impact on the environment and our global community.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I was able to start over I would have found a business partner, which is something I would still love to find. I think businesses often thrive when you have two people with different strengths working towards the same goal. Otherwise, entrepreneurship can be lonely. I am grateful that the textile community, in Colorado and abroad, is so welcoming and supportive. It’s wonderful to meet textile artists and see the unique products born from love and dedication to their craft.
