Today we’d like to introduce you to Salihah Moore.
Salihah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I come from a very creative family, my mom is an art school grad and my dad was a prolific director, puppeteer, collage artist, and poet. I grew up loving to paint and play with whatever I could get my hands on. When I discovered beading in my 20’s, it was like painting and craft combined and it quickly became my number one medium. The business evolved really organically, I was wearing a pair of earrings at a dinner party with the owners of Gravel & Gold in San Francisco and they started carrying them. Soon after, more stores inquired and my brand was born! I’ve really enjoyed experimenting with larger art pieces and wearables, expanding out from the jewelry into other ways beads play.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been pretty smooth, business isn’t my strong suit but learning a lot on the way. It’s a very small team, me and one amazing assistant so everything is made with a lot of attention and care.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an artist working with glass seed beads. I have a jewelry practice but I also make wearable art, wall hangings, and bags. I specialize in complementary palettes and abstract, asymmetrical designs.
We recently made a video with Lawrence Martinez which was really fun, beads are so fluid and it was special to finally capture their grace and mobility on film.
I think the beaded shirts are really unique, their weight is divine and each piece is a wearable, beaded painting.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Thank you for you’re interest in our beads! We hope they inspire and bring joy.
