Meet Sara Sims of Sara’s Cosmic Cookie Dough in Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Sims.

Sara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It was in the summer of 1988 when my love of cookie dough truly began. I would spend my summers making and eating cookie dough blissfully unaware that eating raw cookie dough could make me sick. It was a magical summer of sweet, scrumptious love. But as I grew older and wiser, I said goodbye to the joys of eating raw Cookie Dough and committed myself to a life of healthy eating.

It wasn’t until the winter of 2015 on the island of St. Croix when Cookie Dough and I found each other again. I was visiting my dear friend Elizabeth and we were both on a strict clean eating diet and craving chocolate chip cookies. That’s when Elizabeth shared the most amazing cookie dough treat that miraculously did not violate our restrictive diet. Even more amazing, the cookie dough was vegan and safe to eat raw or baked into cookies. It felt too good to be true. This cookie dough was both delicious AND nutritious. For the first time, I discovered that being healthy and eating cookie dough were not mutually exclusive. I could now have my dough and eat it too!

As my cookie dough love affair was reborn with more passion than ever before, I shared this new amazing cookie dough with friends and family far and wide. The love spread and all that ate the dough agreed, it was the best tasting cookie dough and cookies. The demand grew and grew until a realization became crystal clear, the love, this dough, was meant to be shared. Sara’s Cosmic Cookie Dough was thus born out of love and the desire to share the most delicious gluten-free, vegan, grain-free, nutrient-dense chocolate chip cookie dough made.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve been very blessed by having an amazing investor support and believe in me and the product right out of the gate. This has made the road to bringing the cookie dough to market a fairly smooth and joyful journey thus far. That said, it takes a lot of work and time to get the product out to the consumers who want it the most.

My biggest struggle has been being a one-woman show. In the beginning, I was making the cookie dough, packaging the cookie dough and distributing the cookie dough, all while doing the sales, SEO, web design, ad designs, marketing, social media, public relations, demo’s, online fulfillment, shipping, invoicing, deliveries, shelf stocking, inventory management, book-keeping, fairs and festivals. My family and friends have helped me tremendously by contributing their time and energy, but being responsible for doing every job in the company well has been a lot to manage. The challenges are many and the struggles come daily especially when managing and learning all the technology that goes along with having an eCommerce business. The learning curve is steep.

Today, I have the help of a co-packer to make and package the cookie dough and fulfill my online orders which has been a tremendous resource in freeing up my time to do the rest. I’m also grateful to have a CU marketing intern helping me with my social media. It feels great to be able to start building a team and a company that goes beyond myself.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sara’s Cosmic Cookie Dough – what should we know

It’s sold in 3 flavors, Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip and Hot Chocolate Chip (which is a double chocolate with a hint of cayenne pepper for a little spicy kick).

Today Sara’s Cosmic Cookie Dough is sold online at www.CosmicCookieDough.com, on Amazon and in health food stores in and around the Denver/Boulder area such as Lucky’s Markets, Alfalfa’s and Nooch Vegan Market. We’ve also just been approved to sell in local Whole Foods Markets and will be going into stores April 2020.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I certainly can’t take all the credit for the success of Sara’s Cosmic Cookie Dough. My dear friend Elizabeth helped me come up with the recipe for this amazing product and has been a great advocate for the creation of the brand. The company would not exist without the support of my amazing friend and investor, Jessica Dolgan. She’s been my cheerleader and mentor from the beginning.

I don’t know how I could have made it through all those long nights making and packaging cookie dough in our commissary kitchen without the hard-working support of my mother. And, participating in all the festivals would not have been possible without the help of my wonderful friends, Kelli and Justin. All of my family has been such a wonderful support as well, all loving the product and cheering me on. I am so grateful for everyone in my life who has continued to share their love for the cookie dough.
