Meet Sarah J Bohnenkamp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah J Bohnenkamp.

Sarah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I navigate life in an anti-average way.

I help people move from mediocre to trailblazer status.

I’ve never let being the underdog or being brand new at something stop me from charging toward audacious goals.

I’m a firm believer mediocrity is a choice and help leaders and entrepreneurs DO big things through my Living the ANTI-AVERAGE Lifestyle approach.

I once was a world-class rodeo queen (who lived in an apartment and had to borrow my first pair of official “queen boots”), then I quickly moved from training coordinator to talent development director in the financial world, and then I found myself graduating to the C-Suite in an industry, I’d never fathomed leading (in the beef/agriculture world for the American National CattleWomen).

Four years ago, I left the safety of my corporate job to open my own coaching and consulting business,

Today, I bring HUGE energy and leadership and communication expertise to a variety of audiences who agree average is an insult and who want to learn strengths-based approaches for how to lead with greater impact and ease (and sometimes I even incorporate horses (aka equine guided leadership) into my work. I’m a champion of the dark horse and attribute much of my success to real horses.

I push people for anti-average because the world is drowning in mediocrity and we can do better.

If you read my personal Twitter profile, it says I’m “… a momma of two little loves muffins. Wife. Singer (and bad guitar player). Leadership Coach. Developer. Dreamer. Horse lover.”

If you look at my business Instagram feed (@sarahjbohnenkamp) you’ll see I have the pleasure of working with TONS of cool clients and on neat projects, including the recent Sustainability Communicators Summit hosted in Chicago at the world McDonald’s Headquarters, a video shoot at the Vold Rodeo Ranch near Pueblo, and a neat speaking engagement with the Jefferson County 4-H.

I work with clients around the world to establish strengths-based brands and sustainable leadership and business communication systems and also privately coach a handful of high-performing leaders and entrepreneurs each year who are building epic platforms to serve in creative, Western, agriculture, and adventure-inspired industries.

I love pop culture, yoga, hiking in the Rocky Mountains, and live shows at Red Rocks.

And… when all is said and done, I’m a hope dealer.

Has it been a smooth road?
Haha. Right.

I think everyone has struggles. Mine include things like making poor choices personally in the love department. I was divorced in my early twenties, then had a terrible relationship for several years with someone who was abusive when I lived in Arizona. This impacted my life, for sure.

Both of my parents were/are alcoholics. They divorced when I was two and hate each other to this day. When I stand for bringing more love and leadership into the world, this hurts my heart.

Being a woman in agriculture has been a challenge. I was often the youngest, blondest and most unheard. It’s been an interesting twist on the work I do, but it’s sure been fun to overcome these challenges.

We all have issues… but I try to focus on the good :-).

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’ve already shared a bit about the business…

I coach.
I consult businesses with communication and leadership.
I speak (upcoming event August 1st with Miss Rodeo America & Pro Rodeo Cowboys Assoc.).

I’m known for my big energy, passion, and creative approaches to business branding and communication. I’m also known for being a workhorse. I dig in and DO the work. My schedule is always full because I love it and wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m transparent, uber positive, and impatient :-).

I’m most proud of the fact that my clients’ ROCK. They are diverse, they take me to unique places (like Ireland beef country and Pigeon Forge, TN), and better yet, they are doing work that is making the world better. I get to help people change the status quo!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely! We have so many great entrepreneurs in the Denver area! I feel like we lead in this space actually!
We also have great places where people come together to learn, network, support each other’s ideas, inspire, etc.

Plus…the airport is a quick drive from Parker on e470! (I travel a lot)

Starting out…get out of your house…and meet people! Network with people who feel good. Go to places where your ideal client hangs out and find out what they like.

Denver has SO many events happening, just SHOW UP at one and start connecting. Listen, and do what Keith Ferrazzi says… Focus more on being InterestED than InterestING. Ask great questions and be a sponge.

Also, our library systems ROCK. They not only offer free audio books and digital downloads, etc., but they have video rooms and meeting space that is totally awesome. I will book a room to have a new place to get creative, or sometimes will host free events there. There is no excuse for not learning or having a place to build new things for your business.
