Meet Sarah Key of The Keys to Travel in Henderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Key.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up and going to school, I never knew what I truly wanted to do with my life. I never had this grand idea of wanting to be a doctor, lawyer, teacher, etc., probably because I loved to try and do everything! So when I got to college and had to pick my major, I went as generic as possible. I majored in management and marketing. I loved people and businesses, so that seemed to be a great route. Being raised in the Midwest, I went to the typical Midwest route. I got my degree in business and went on to my 9-5 job without exploring things I actually loved, like travel. I didn’t know anything else.

Fast-forward a few years, where I had then moved to Denver, Colorado, working as a marketing assistant in a corporate setting that I did not enjoy. I started exploring other options and learned entrepreneurship was where I finally felt right. When I started exploring options in the travel industry, I knew I was on the right path. Eventually, I found my way to the travel agent career and life finally felt right. I am now a full-time travel agent with a travel blog helping couples and groups travel more and stress less!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. I fought the process the whole way. I always knew there was something more for me out there, but I just could not figure it out. In hindsight, I just had to go through the exploration journey, but while I was going through it, it felt like I was going to be and feel stuck forever.

When I finally found my passion in the travel industry, the next step was to leave my “secure” full-time job. Who would have thought leaving a job I despised would be so hard? Well, change and leaving what I imagined to be a secure job is hard and scary. Even though I had set an end-date, the company decided to make the decision for me sooner than I had planned. Which led to the next struggle. How do I make a job I was doing part-time instantly support me full-time? Like everything else in life, I figured it out. That’s just what you do! When there are no other options you figure it out.

I’m still working through struggles, but that just means that I am continually learning and growing. I don’t think the struggles will ever end, but I also don’t want them to end because that means I’m not pushing myself or my business to grow.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
As a travel agent, I help travelers plan and book their vacations. After working with all types of travelers, I have come to love and specialize in couples and groups. For couples, that can mean honeymoons, anniversary trips, birthday trips, or just a getaway together. I love that I’m able to help couples deepen their relationships together through travel. It is a special time that builds a strong bond you can’t gain anywhere else. I also help groups travel, which can mean a group of friends, bachelorette/bachelor parties, sales incentive trips, and more. Again, traveling together and experiencing a new place together builds such strong bonds and builds lifelong memories you will never forget. It’s an honor to be able to help make this dream trips a reality for travelers.

I believe what sets me apart from others is my passion for providing the best travel experience for my clients matches my passion for this industry. I think travel changes lives and the world for the better and everyone should get to experience visiting a new destination that will help them get out of their comfort zone. Building personal relationships with my clients allows me to build the best vacations around each individual need and want.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood was spending every weekend in the summer at our family cottage on the water. All my aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents would go up there what felt like every weekend. We would spend hours on the beach, in the water, grilling out and sitting by the campfire. It was like a mini-vacation every weekend with my favorite people in the world.
