Meet Sarah Perez of Suitable Miss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Perez.

Sarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Sarah Perez (Vocals) Kelsey Gant (Bassist) and Andrew Elofson (Guitarist) started Suitable Miss in February 2019. Initially, Andrew was the drummer of the group, and we auditioned
different guitarists around Denver. We never really found any that we connected with, so we decided to make Andrew the guitarist and audition drummers. We then auditioned Tom Hanson, who I just moved to Colorado from Fargo, North Dakota. We instantly loved him and decided to make him a permanent member of the band. Kelsey and Sarah had the idea that the Denver music scene was missing a lot of female performers, as well as “poppy” music. We released our first EP titled “Don’t Look Back” On November 1, 2019. Don’t Look Back is available on all streaming platforms!

Our first show was at Larimer Lounge on August 25th, 2019. We played to a nearly sold-out crowd, which showed us that making music and performing shows is something that we could definitely continue doing. Recently we have released three singles titled “All We Could Have Been, Thought of You, and Pass Me By” available on all streaming platforms. This is a band built on friendship, but what makes us special is we also have a very close passion to music and wanting to make a career out of this.

Before quarantine, we brought another guitarist into Suitable Miss, named Noah Sauls. Due to the complexity of our songs, it is easier to have a second guitarist rather than have the second guitar on our backing tracks for shows. Noah adds a fun energy to the band and we are so excited to get to do shows with him. So far, we have done around 6 to 7 shows around Denver and have built a fan base that we are so grateful for. We have a lot of merchandise available on our website and at all of our shows. We had a big show this summer planned opening for the band “Sleep On It”, wWhich sadly had to get canceled due to the coronavirus. Sadly, we also had a tour along the East Coast planned for this summer that had to be cancelled as well. We are all active members of the Denver music scene and have made a lot of friends along the way.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We are so thankful that it has been a smooth road. We all came together so naturally and the songwriting process is such an easy thing to do for us together. I feel like as musicians, we all work really well together. We had the first EP done within a couple of months of being a band and are extremely happy with it. I’d say the only struggle so far is dealing with COVID-19 and the coronavirus. We had a lot of shows and tours taken away from us, which was a bummer, but we decided to take this time to write and record instead. It has been a challenge to learn how to do this remotely instead of together, but we figured it out. I had to record vocals in my closet at one point, but it was well worth it. We have managed to still stay productive. We are thankful to our fans who have still listened to our music that we have recently released in quarantine.

We’d love to hear more about your band.
What really sets us apart from other bands is the female presence. There are not a lot of females in the music scene and our band has two females! AND we are cousins! I think something else that really makes us stand apart as our music as a whole. It is very poppy and upbeat and I think the world needs a lot of that right now. Initially, we were very scared to do shows, and worried that people wouldn’t show up. However, our family fans and friends have not let us down yet. We are so grateful for all of the support.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for us would be continuing to build our streaming numbers across all platforms. We also hope to play festivals and things like that at some point. We were just getting momentum, getting ready to go on tours with COVID-19 happened. When things go back to normal, hopefully, we can come back in to the scene swinging and keep doing the things we were doing because it seems to be working. Success for us would be continuing to build our streaming numbers across all platforms. Success for us but also be to make music that people can relate to. That has been a goal of ours from day one. We want to make music that people can dance to and relate to so that they can hopefully make it a part of their everyday lives.
