Today we’d like to introduce you to Schuyler Lakey.
Schuyler, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Everything started with a cashier job working at Buffalo Exchange. I had no background within the fashion industry but knew I needed to make a change in my life and with the (at the time) new interest in styling myself, saw working there as an opportunity to explore the field. As time went by, I not only began gaining knowledge about fashion but began an unforeseen path of self-discovery.
I went to shows featuring drag queens. I remember being completely awed by those dressing themselves in clothing that society had told me I couldn’t wear. I was witnessing firsthand people actively defying the status quo; they had not only made a haven away from persecution but built a place where it was celebrated. With the incredible support from Buffalo Exchange and the amazing friendships I built with the drag and queer community, I found the strength to start exploring my own identity and how I chose to dress myself. I found comfort in both men’s and women’s clothing, mixing styles, patterns, decades and gender. Fashion became the voice of my identity, being gender-neutral. For the first time in my life, I was celebrating myself.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think anyone’s road has been smooth. I struggle financially, just like anyone else. I struggle emotionally, with the ache of being away from family or trying to smile when I am down. I struggle critically, where I don’t believe in myself and think that I’m in no position to be celebrated.
However, even with these challenges, I consider myself incredibly lucky. I have met so many incredible people along my journey of self-discovery. I noticed within the relationships I’ve built we are all struggling, however, through that pain we find solace and comfort in each other.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am an Associate Manager at Buffalo Exchange, Colorado. I am proud to work for a company in a world of fast fashion where we provide clothing a second chance. However, I am more proud of working for a company that is so close to the queer community. We are a space just like the ones I found at the bars of drag performers, many people see Buffalo Exchange as a haven to explore how to express themselves, myself included. They even headed the movement for Denver’s first Pride Crosswalk, where I was honored to assist in with my background in graphic design.
When you look back, what are you most proud of?
My proudest moment isn’t a singular moment. I always feel a rush of gratitude whenever I see my friends performing in drag on stages in places the community has built. I’m beyond thankful for their friendship. I am proud to be a part of that community and proud to work for a place that supports that ideal.
