Meet Scott Hensen of Dust & Spark in Lafayette

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Hensen.

Scott, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I developed a passion for working with my hands at a young age always deconstructing and rebuilding whatever I could get my hands on from Legos to VCRs and computers. In high school, I worked as a contractor assistant for my fathers home remodel business learning valuable skills in the trades. I continued my love for hands-on work in college as a bicycle builder and mechanic for various shops which led to a desk job in the bicycle industry. I soon realized that my passions and hands-on creativity didn’t align well with the office lifestyle so I started building metal & wood furniture on the side after being gifted some woodworking and metalworking tools. It started with a few pieces for my own house and has grown over the past two years to a full-time business where I get to enjoy what I do every day.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t been smooth and is still rocky, but off-roading is more fun! There is a big learning curve for starting a business from scratch from learning about tax laws to bookkeeping and invoicing. I am always learning more about the craft as well which is great because progression is key and it’s interesting to look back on the pieces I’ve made for my home and know how I would do them differently now because of what I have learned. One of the hardest struggles was the jump from building furniture part-time to quitting my day job and giving this all of my attention because it was (and still is) uncertain as to the amount of business I generate from month to month.

Please tell us about Dust & Spark.
Dust & Spark specializes in combining metal and wood to create custom furniture and decor. We strive to use reclaimed and salvaged materials to be environmentally sustainable and to give new life to materials destined for the landfill. We pride ourselves on creating elegant furniture and decor that is constructed to last for generations. Working with both commercial and residential clients, our pieces are focal points that inspire and stand the test of time.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have fond memories of skiing on Saturdays in winter as a kid with my sister at Winter Park. We did Eskimo Ski Club for a few years and had a blast learning to ski and going off on our own at Mary Jane in the afternoons.
