Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Love.
Scott began his career as a teacher in Colorado Springs, then moved to Japan and taught middle school in a small city at the foot of Mt Fuji for three years – and, yes, he’s climbed to the top of Fuji!
Back in the States, he shifted gears and joined Ziff-Davis Publishing to work in a completely new department – something called “online publishing.” A year later web browsers appeared, and both the Web and his career took off.
Scott served at Apple as a Web Technology Evangelist – working with businesses to create software for the Mac platform – and then from there joined Macromedia, the creators of Flash and Dreamweaver as a Technical Marketing Manager.
Along the way, he taught himself FileMaker and Web development. In every position he’s held, he’s left behind a custom app or database (some of which are still used to this day!) – which later dawned as his true passion.
After an obligatory right-of-passage at two doomed start-ups, Scott joined a consulting company specializing in custom app development. He later co-founded Soliant Consulting and helped grow that firm to $12m in annual revenues spanning multiple offices across the United States.
He’s written books on Claris technologies, trained hundreds of students, launched dozens of careers through mentoring and internships, won Excellence awards, and formed deep lasting relationships with coworkers, partners, and clients.
Codence began as a reimagining of a software firm with a long history in Boulder — New Millennium Communications, founded by Danny Mack. Danny and Scott have known each other for decades and vowed one day to work together.
Scott joined the crew in late 2017 as CEO. In 2018, the company rolled out its new brand and focused as Codence, with a mission to transform businesses – and the lives of those within them – through technology. Revenues have grown more than 300%, the team works with a wide array of clients throughout the world, and they’ve broadened their focus to include custom apps, accounting and analytics, data visualization, and award-winning design.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Life in the tech industry – as exciting as it can be – is always challenging. Finding the right people, making good decisions, placing bets on where technologies will go, balancing between “good enough” and “perfect” – it’s all tough.
That said, the biggest challenge, for me, is getting folks into alignment. By definition, our clients come to us during periods of transition – in the face of their challenges, they’ve stopped and mused, “Surely there must be a better way, a better tool, a better system…” Change is hard, it’s new, and it’s risky. Successful change – transformation – takes careful alignment of team members, goals, communication, planning, and vision. It’s not enough to have a good idea: you’ve got to get your team, your stakeholders/clients, the users, and decision-makers all on board and working toward a common purpose.
Codence – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
By definition, our clients come to us seeking change – to innovate, to fix, to find a better way. We see technology as a means to an end: it is here to unlock insight, drive outcomes, and make an impact.
For more than 30 years, we’ve been working closely with our clients of all sizes and in all industries to build robust, flexible software solutions. Our clients range from Fortune 100 enterprises to small businesses and non-profits. We specialize in Claris technologies, web and mobile apps, analytics, accounting, data visualization, and award-winning design.
Proud to be a long-standing Colorado business, with most of our team local, we have colleagues and clients all over the world. We follow mature processes, scale based on need, advise and share insights from hundreds of other businesses, and do a lot of listening.
We’re here to serve.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
I’ll admit, I have many proud moments. I love designing tools that make an impact for our clients. I’m extremely satisfied with the work of building companies. I love evolving a team over time from a vision within my mind’s eye.
My greatest satisfaction, ironically, lies with my first job as a teacher: I’m proud to say that I have always enjoying hiring. Every facet of it. The initial recruiting, the conversations, the coaching, the mentoring… in some form or another, I have been both hiring and teaching in every moment of my career.
Some of our industry’s best thought leaders served as interns and apprentices with me. I’ve managed young people who have gone on to found companies of their own. I have directly launched literally dozens and assisted in some small way hundreds of careers. At Codence, we are actively supporting apprenticeships for people looking to break into the tech industry. We’re working with clients to place apprentices in their organizations.
I hope my legacy in my professional life someday is to have served well, supported and loved my colleagues, and given all I can to help open doors in people’s lives.
