Meet Scott Romano and Will Alverson of Cultivo Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Romano and Will Alverson.

Scott and Will, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We founded Cultivo Media back in March of 2018 as a digital agency dedicated to the local community around the University of Denver’s campus. After a great summer of client work, including the Colorado Media Project, we purchased @milehighandhungry, Denver’s #1 rated food Instagram with over 30,000 followers. Over 2019 our team increased the follower count by over 4000 and doubled yearly revenue.

Mile High & Hungry continues to serve as Denver’s premier food-influencer account and partners with companies and brands ranging from The Kitchen Next Door to Patron Tequila and Capital One’s Venture Card. Starting in 2020, we have partnered with DU’s College of Business and their schools of Hospitality and Marketing to develop curriculum around daily account management and growth. We now utilize a team of 13 students and a faculty member to manage the account and content production. We are excited to see the growth and increased impact Mile High & Hungry will have in our growing city.

We are also excited to announce the 2020 launch of Resular (https://resular.com/du), a marketplace built for connecting student freelancers to local businesses. We have over 100 students on the platform already with skills ranging from web development to graphic design, photography, and business consulting. Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Balancing our roles as small-business owners and full-time students has not been easy! While it is our last year at DU, Will and I are often put at odds with the demands of homework, clients, and team members. However, we have found true enjoyment out of pushing ourselves to our limits, but, we are humans and time is a finite resource. By relying on each other and our team, we have been able to grow our business and continue our education while still enjoying our time at DU and in Denver.

When we think back on the last two years of our journey it is easy for us to find the hundreds of times we’ve made mistakes and faced challenges but it is so much easier for us to see how we’ve grown. We can tell you stories of firing friends, getting screamed at by PR agents, and missing deadlines but Will and I have never been more proud of the work and the way we’ve grown as individuals.

Cultivo Media is a digital development firm offering a suite of services and a portfolio of internal-ventures including MileHigh&Hungry and Resular. We maintain a dynamic network of developers, designers, and consultants to best serve our clients and their digital projects ranging from websites, creative marketing, design, and content creation. Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The University of Denver has been our largest support system. Project XITE’s summer accelerator program has taken our business from its founding to today and support from folks like Nina Sharma and Dean JB Holston has proven invaluable.

We also maintain a tight network of mentors including Roxanne White (former Chief of Staff to Governor Hickenlooper), Drew Lawrence (Director of Lead generation at Xactly Corporation), and Will Hanisch (Partner at GreenRoom Legal).

Our mentors’ have helped us minimize the learning curve of starting and growing a business. Their vast and diverse experiences in corporate development and team management have provided us with an invaluable education. Encouragement from them to reflect critically and strategically plan our future has driven us to be the best founders and partners we can be.
