Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Malkasian.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sean. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I stood at the same starting point as most. A preteen with too much time on their hands. The affinity or at least obsession with music had already begun. I remember having a tape of my favorite song looped over and over again, side A and B. The music lessons started at ten, as I got older and needed more structure and discipline, music was there to keep me focused and moving forward. It’s continued to be the most integral part of my growth as an individual and has taught me the lessons of, what you put in is what you get out.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is never smooth in a creative or entrepreneurial endeavor. Frankly, at times, it is like pulling teeth. I am never satiated and to me, a piece of music is never finished or exactly right. The biggest challenge is realizing that grit and one’s will to continue creating is what separates the professionals from the amateurs. Success is subjective, if I make it there would I really know? This lesson took me forever to learn. I made a litany of bad choices and adapted poor thought patterns which left me unfulfilled and depressed. I was hopeless, homeless and strung out. I felt indifferent and affected at the same time. When I didn’t reach the proverbial summit I crashed into self-destruction. I’ve been at this for twenty years and who knows me? In my view, who cares? Happiness is direction. I have no choice but to push that boulder up the hill every day. What matters is never stopping.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
In a nutshell, I play guitar and write songs. I play and write for myself and others. I have three solo records, a resume of features and performances on recorded music and live shows. I currently work with Fuzzy J, a stoner rock outfit; Mother Tongue, a hip/hop funk, fusion ensemble and continue my own solo work. What sets me apart is that I am nothing more than myself behind the guitar and microphone. I don’t camouflage my creative idiosyncrasies, I find my place within a framework and express. This is what I aspire to do every day.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think the most important attribute to my success is my belief in the power of the song or ensemble. I believe it’s more important to be effective than to be correct. When I work with others I try to find my place within the collective and cooperate to the best of my abilities with everything going on. Listen to others and develop that rapport. This can manifest itself musically or in relationships.
