Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelese Pratt, N.D.
Shelese, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I decided to become a doctor after years of searching for quality health care. I know what it feels like to be sick and my providers couldn’t help me. I had life-threatening asthma in my early 20’s and recovered my health with naturopathic medicine. As a child, I struggled written expression, spelling and reading. I compensated for years with a learning disability that I tried to conceal.
In 1998, I removed my learning disabilities and had my own amazing results with Brain Integration Therapy. I want to serve those patients who are not able to get the health care they seek in a restrictive system. I studied naturopathic medicine and built my clinic with the ultimate goal of improving patient’s health and quality of life. After my medical training, I studied with the Autism Institute to become a Defeat Autism Now! Doctor. This started my journey into working with complex nutritional biochemistry and helping patients with difficult conditions. Over the past ten years, I have become an expert in genomics and environmental medicine. I am honored to lecture and teach doctors all over the world.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not always been a smooth road. I started my career as a poor single mother on food stamps. I gave myself six months on food stamps at the beginning of my practice to ‘make it’. With long hours and a wonderful network, I created a successful business. In 2006, Colorado was a very difficult state to practice as a naturopathic doctor. I was told someone had killed a child and they claimed they were a naturopathic doctor. Later it was revealed that this person created their own diploma and did not graduate or pass boards to be a naturopathic doctor. At that time, since I was new in practice, I was told DORA could shut down my practice at any time because of the political issues in Colorado. I started an east coast practice in 2007 and worked in both locations (CT and CO) for 12 years. This year, I closed my east coast office and now I only practice in Colorado.
Please tell us more about your practice.
My practice and clinic are focused on neurology and complex medical conditions relating to metabolic disease. I use functional medicine and my expertise in biochemistry (methylation) and physiology to help my patients get to the root cause of their symptoms through a strategic approach. The modalities (tools of my practice) I use in my practice are nutrition (diet and nutritional supplements), botanicals, environmental medicine, classical homeopathy and hydrotherapy.
Many patients come to my office after seeing many other doctors. They are scared, frustrated and looking for answers that no one has been able to figure out. I often tell people I look at medicine like I am a detective. I look for the clues that have lead to the current health situation with strategy. I will work with you to figure it out, no matter how complex your health seems. Some of the complex cases I have treated have been Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Cerebral Palsy, PVL, Global Development Delay, Angelman Syndrome, learning difficulties (ADD, ADHD, and dyslexia), sensory processing disorders, autistic spectrum disorders, digestive system disorders/disease, endocrine disorders, autoimmune disease, and mood disorders.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Over the last year, I have started teaching other doctors. I love helping other doctors learn a strategic approach to helping their patients. I am excited to teach both here in the states and abroad in the coming years.
I have also just started using Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequencies (PEMF) to treat pain, bone health, other health conditions and the effects of EMF/EMR. This is a technology that has been around for years. PEMF is a wonderful therapy to employ as we struggle with a pain management issue in medicine and start to feel the effects of 5G.
