Meet Sierra Morrisette

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Morrisette.

Sierra, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started as a hairstylist in North Carolina in 2011. Moshi salon in Chapel Hill was my landing ground and I apprenticed under my boss Catlin Hettel at the beginning of my career. I always had a knack for styling and was interested in the editorial and fashion community immediately when I got into cosmetology. After moving to Boulder and then Denver in 2016, I have been working harder to hone in on my skills as a hairstylist. I spend a lot of my extra time behind the scenes of photoshoots, working to get the perfect picture.

Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely has not been smooth sailing throughout my career. While moving from the east coast to Colorado, I had to practically start my career over again. Being behind the chair as a base for my editorial styling, I had to start building clientele each time I moved.

It’s also been hard for me finding motivation through rediscovering friends and family out in CO. All while rediscovering myself. Finding my passions again and clarifying what I really want my career to focus on currently. This has taken a few years of grounding to begin to achieve.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I have been freelancing hair and working on editorial photoshoots for the past seven months of my career. It’s been a wild road of not being behind the chair. I specialize in hairstyling for events/photoshoots and fashion coloring.

I’ve been working with Denver’s 303 Magazine on some shoots this past year and am proud to say a few have been published. I think people who work with me appreciate the sincerity I bring with me to every interaction. I have been an artist on paper and canvas for many years before I became a hairstylist. This fuels my motivation and eye for color and styling and it comes out in my work.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love Denver. It has been a wonderful landing ground for me as an editorial stylist. When I moved from NC, all my guests questioned why Colorado. Why not LA or New York? The big fashion districts of the US. I wasn’t quite sure how to respond other than, this place has magic in it. I do believe the fashion industry is blooming here and there is a lot of potential in this area as an artist. I plan to create roots in LA in a year or two as my fashion career expands. Although, honestly, with the boom in social media, having the ability to connect so instantly with anyone in the world is changing the game. If you have the drive and motivation, I think you can be anywhere in the world and make it work to your advantage.
