Today we’d like to introduce you to Sita Jacobson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sita. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up, my grandmother Sabina had an incredible jewelry collection. From an early age, I gained a deep appreciation for precious gems & fine jewelry. Loving the moments spent in the presence of her gorgeous rings, bracelets, and necklaces, I started making jewelry of my own. To honor mygrandmother’s name and exquisite taste, Sabina Jewelry was born. I started out making jewelry solely as a creative outlet for me and to make pieces that I wanted to adorn myself with. The compliments I received on my jewelry and the requests for commissioned pieces started to pile up, and it was then that I opened myself up to the possibility that I might have a product that had the potential to do well. I had been living in Hawaii after I graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, and this is where I started getting inspired to make jewelry. I had considered the possibility of starting the business in Hawaii, but to be honest, I was a bit intimidated because there were so many jewelry brands already established. When I moved back to Colorado, I moved to a little resort town called Steamboat Springs, andto my great surprise it seemed to be lacking in the local jewelry brand category. I saw a Niche Market in the desired area and that was all it took!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not exactly been a smooth road. However, I count my blessings that I was able to grow the business gradually and organically. ‘Sabina Jewelry’ started as a side hustle and I never counted on it to pay any of my bills but instead used it as my creative outlet. Making jewelry gave me a lot of joy and I think that was visible in my pieces. As the demand began to grow, I was able to reevaluate and make the decision to make my side hustle my main hustle when the time was right. It is all about timing! The biggest struggle I would say is learning to manage wearing all the hats of the business. I started the business because I wanted to design and make jewelry. And as a small business owner, my time and attention must also go to managing budgets and staff, maintaining a website, managing social media, just to name a few.
Sabina Jewelry – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The natural world inspires me. The simple but dynamic beauty of nature influences my designs and the ease in which each piece can be worn. I want women to put on Sabina Jewelry and not have to worry about taking it off. I want these pieces to join women on their hikes, their bike rides, their ski runs, and still be there, beautifully ready to be worn to a wedding, a dinner, or an event. To be the first pieces packed for a vacation and the last thing a woman has to think about.
I design my jewelry to be easy, but also chic and feminine. I use the highest quality materials and design each piece to last. I hope that as I continue to find inspiration from the outdoors, and as I travel and allow new cultures to influence new designs, the women who wear Sabina jewelry find new ways to share their own uniquely inspired style. I want women to appreciate the handcrafted elements and hand-chosen gems…and, most importantly, to feel beautiful and to feel strong.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success can look so different for so many different people. For me, I believe in the importance of being distinct. Doing something I am passionate about and truly enjoyable day in and day out brings me feelings of success. Being able to live in a place I cherish and am passionate about and surrounded by the outdoor activities and community I love, and feeling like I am doing something right when I see the smiles on my client’s faces, brings me so much joy.
