Today we’d like to introduce you to Skip Stone.
Skip, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It’s been interesting. I jumped at the chance to be in the industry. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to be at the ground floor of a brand-new industry. I believe the plant can help us in tremendous ways. Cannabis is going to disrupt so many industries; alcohol, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, textiles, plastics, wellness, supplements, natural foods, and the list keeps growing.
Anyway, I entered the space in 2014 (the year Colorado legalized cannabis for adults) with a solution to kids accidentally eating their parent’s edibles by designing a functional and portable storage kit that had a built-in combination lock. I was accepted into CanopyBoulder, the first business accelerator for the cannabis industry, and I was in their first-class five years ago (they’ve had 11 classes since).
There I met my mentor, Steve Norman, who has a wealth of startup experience and joined full-time. We’re now up to five full-time employees and we’re making lots of progress, it’s really exhilarating but it’s a grind too. However, we believe that working hard for something you don’t care about is call stress, but working hard for something that you love is called passion. We’re pretty passionate about our mission.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Challenges abound in this highly regulated market. We’ve had some banking challenges, but our biggest issue was three years ago we had a large order of our kid-safe bags seized by US Customs and Border Patrol saying that our products are paraphernalia. I guess I can see their point since our products are for cannabis, but mostly we’re about keeping kids safe, so we have a different angle than most in our industry and even we got hassled. Luckily, we appealed their ruling and we won, but it took two years to get our inventory back, so that was our biggest challenge.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the STASHLOGIX, Inc. story. Tell us more about the business.
Stashlogix creates innovative cannabis storage products, handbags, and accessories. We help people be discreet with functional and fashionable products. We’re most known for patenting a built-in lock on our stash bags. I’m most proud of our team. We’re all learning a ton and we’re getting better and stronger everyday. What really sets us apart is that we aren’t designing products for the typical “counter-culture” person, we’re doing something new, we’re targeting the soccer moms, professionals, baby boomers, and athletes. We’re helping the new consumers that are discovering the benefits of the plant, but they don’t want the judgment that comes with it. Our brand connects with the Colorado lifestyle, outdoorsy and active people. Basically, we’re designing a product for ourselves.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think the longer you’re around the more luck you’ll get, but you need staying power until luck shows up. We’ve had some good luck and some bad luck, regardless we just keep moving forward. Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out, at least that’s our philosophy, but good luck is always welcome.
