Today we’d like to introduce you to Sue Freeman.
Sue, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We started out JRS as a partner with another party. Unfortunately, this partnership ended quickly and our family made the decision to take it on independently. So, at that point we didn’t have an exact vision. It quickly turned into a community/neighborhood place to gather. We met amazing people and they met amazing people and so on. So many friendships have been made at JRS. The neighborhood needed a place for community.
After about five months of being open we were approved to serve our New York style pizza. Business started picking up and we added more TV’s and started focusing on sports. We have the NFL Sunday ticket every year and we have people from every team come in and have a great time. Lots of friendly competition among competing teams. We also have all the Colorado teams on when they are playing. We also added drafts to our selection and from that added a mug club. People love the mug club. We also have a hot wing challenge that one of our staff came up with. It is very challenging and if you make it you get your picture on the wall of fame.
Our menu is focused on pizza, but we also have appetizers, subs, and my Mom’s delicious meatballs. We have salads that are so fresh. Our dough is made daily and thrown for every order. Our sauce is house made also. Our customers have become friends and are the reason that makes JRS a wonderful place to go. We also have a pizza of the month to offer something different and unique.
Has it been a smooth road?
Running a kitchen and bar is so challenging. I worked in restaurants when I was in college which was a longtime ago. I have learned so much and keep learning every day. You have to be very organized. I think the biggest challenge is figuring out what people want. The craft beer industry is so vast and trying to decide what beers to bring in is overwhelming. These pasts months with Covid19 has been one of the most challenging things we have ever been through, especially being a restaurant/bar owner. Our business plummeted 80%. At this point we have opened at the limited capacity, but what the future holds for us or any small business is still so uncertain. the community has been so supportive, but our margins are so slim it has been very hard.
Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in Pizza. Having a great crust is the key to pizza. We have a secret ingredient in our recipe that really brings it to another level of deliciousness. People come in to relax and have a cold beer or drink and some good pizza. Socialize if they want or just watch one of our ten big screen TV’s, we also have a 110″ projection screen. Normally we have many board games, pool, darts, and a game called Ahole which is like corn-hole but on the wall. We are proud of all the friendships we have made and how people tell us how they feel at home. All our staff family have been with us at least two years and one for over 3.5 years. We treat everyone as they are family.
