Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Hauserman.
Suzanne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started taking yoga 20+ years ago when my kids were little babies for a moment of peace. After I decided to go to teacher training 12 years ago, I started teaching in the area and slowly grew my presence here. Simultaneously I had joined a new Crossfit gym and was teaching mobility and yoga there. When they outgrew their gym, they moved into a bigger location and asked me to be the other side of the lobby and Flow Yoga Studio was born! It has always been for me to be open to where life is taking me and when opportunities present themself, if they feel right, I jump on them. After the studio got its footing, I decided to add on Flow Yoga Adventures and combine my love of yoga and travel into one for active retreats for yogis.
As of today, we have been open 4 1/2 years and lead retreats to Italy, California, Colorado, and Guatemala and will be leading in Cuba, Spain, Guatemala again, and hopefully Bali in 2021. The future is exciting!
Has it been a smooth road?
I’d say not a smooth road but rather a loopy, zig zag road. It’s so difficult to see where you are going in the midst of big decisions but it all makes sense looking back down the road. You see how one event, how monumental or minimal it seems at the time, was pivotal to bring you to the present situation. Some struggles along the way have been that I have no business training and graduated college with an Art History degree. I’ve had to lean on friends and family for advice as well as other small business owners to sort through things that business majors’ students just know so easily. I’ve had to learn how to do marketing, how to manage a team, how to do payroll and taxes, basically everything to run a business. I feel sometimes it’s a hindrance, but more times than that I feel not having a formal business education has kept my creativity and passion leading the way instead of numbers and charts that might prove it’d be a risky idea.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Flow Yoga Studio is a heated yoga studio that caters to our community. We specialize in power/vinyasa yoga but offer lots of styles and workshops ranging from singing bowls, and stand up paddle board yoga, to meditation classes. We like to offer lifestyle challenges and help our yogis find healthy new alternatives in conjunction with yoga.
As an owner, I am most proud of our connection to the community and our members. As a small studio, we know our yogis, not just physically but are there for them as a part of their support network. We all need connection and yoga can do that but it also requires special teachers who want their life’s work to be facilitating this. We strive to connect our mind, body and breath, but also our community and support network.
I’m very proud of Flow Yoga Adventures as well. We have been able to create intimate eco-minded groups to travel with yoga being our common thread. We are able to take our practice off the mat and into the world and see how the world lives, eats, laughs, and enjoys life. This idea of being a part of our world, rather than stuck in our bubble of our immediate location is very important to me and to share this with people who in some cases have never left the US is very rewarding and powerful. There’s a world to see it and we want to take you there!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like Colorado is especially welcoming to small businesses and seeks unique concepts and ideas to bring to the area in certain regions. In West Arvada we are surrounded by homes and communities and I know firsthand everyone is wanting a central village where unique restaurants and stores could be present. As a relatively new area, we have a lot of strip malls and that means we have to head to Denver or Boulder for those unique shopping and eating opportunities.
