Today we’d like to introduce you to Tairee Dillard.
Tairee, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m 25 and I’ve always had a relationship with humor since I was little. My mom told me after I would always complain to her about how people would make fun of me for being an amputee, that things weren’t going to change so I might as well learn how to be ok with my situation. Since then, I’ve learned I’ve always tried to find the humor in things that surround me.
I have always felt like I was on a stage due to how much I could grab someone’s attention so since I had their attention I performed which my teachers didn’t like so much because class would turn into the “Tairee show” As a kid, I remember watching BET and this show came on called comic view and there was this kid close to my age on there named Lil JJ and ever since then comedy had been in the back of my mind fast forward to my senior year of high school one of my teachers made me do a project on Richard Pryor and I’ve been hooked ever since I knew for sure that’s what I wanted to do with my life his ability to talk about things surrounding him and going on in his personal life made me a fan.
Once I graduated, I got a job at the Improv Comedy Club in Northfield within three months I performed on my first show there, and I’ve been performing here ever since. I’ve performed with comedians such as JB Smoove, Tony Rock, Tony Roberts, and Karlous Miller etc. I love comedy because it’s a place where nothing matters except if you’re funny or not, no matter your background, race, Political Views, or Religion as long as you’re funny, you will be able to perform.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Aside from stairs growing up, a double amputee has had its own obstacles along the way such as well glares, bullying, and the constant struggle to fit in.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I am a comedian I mostly perform at the Denver Improv, I specialize in storytelling and making people laugh and forget their problems even if it’s for just a little bit. I am most proud of the progress I’ve made over the past five years moving from just doing guest spots on shows to hosting now featuring and also headlining one of the bigger clubs in Denver. What sets me apart from other comedians is my ability to control a crowd, my silliness, my delivery, personality, my outlook, and how I see the world differently than everyone else and bring it to the stage.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My determination, drive, and Originality.
