Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Murry.
Thomas, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m Thomas. Born and raised Texan. I spent a lot of my childhood in the kitchen. I grew up to love food and the production behind it. I spent countless hours helping my mother in the kitchen making snacks, dinners, or anything that sounded interesting. The summers spent at my grandmothers would allow me to absorb all the old fashioned ways. As I got older my passion for food and the industry grew. I knew I wanted a restaurant and I knew I wanted to serve my ideas to everyone.
Years later my dream never subsided. I created menus, I spent hours thinking of concepts, looking up ideas for different recipes that I knew I could make different and interesting. I wanted to share with people the things that I like and share different flavors they may have not been experienced too.
Now I live in Denver. I married my high school sweetheart. We have the best little guy anyone could ask for. And the dream to share my ideas with everyone just got bigger and bigger.
That’s what Mr. Murry’s Kitchen is. The things I love, shared with you. I use the most fresh and local products available. From labeling to packaging to ingredients.
I started off wanting to just bottle delicious sauce and things that I could not find here in Colorado. Now I do that as well as traveling and cooking for whomever and partaking in many of the wonderful events the state has to offer.
Thank you so much for being a part of this adventure. I hope you love everything as much as I love sharing it with you. Everything is made with the heart of the Rocky Mountains and the soul of Texas.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Its been a short road so far. I started the beginning of 2018 and spent the entire year getting everything in order. Getting all the licenses, getting the certifications, getting all the recipes approved, gaining and asking all my questions for all the info I needed to know. In December 2018 I was officially ready for the market. Since then I have gained a handful of customers and reached hundreds of new people with my products, In June 2019 I competed in the Kansas City BBQ Competition and placed 10th and 24th with different products. Its been a fun and exciting adventure so far and I am excited for the many adventures to come.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about your work?
Mr. Murry’s Kitchen is food. It’s all food. Just tell me what you want and let’s do it. I started off just bottling sauce but soon realized that wasn’t enough and that I wanted to cook for people’s weddings and private parties and partake in all the wonderful outdoor festivals Colorado is known for. I love cooking tacos and BBQ for people. Being from Texas, both of those things are very familiar to me and I love showing people different flavors and ideas they may have not been exposed to.
I bring a little bit of heat to most of the things that I create and express the need for flavor with heat. Cannot be hot just to be hot. And I would love for people to recognize me for that; all the different flavors brought into one. Being a young company, any and all achievements are very exciting and due for feeling proud. Placing top 10 with my salsa in the Kansas City BBQ Competition was amazing. Picking up my first, then second, and then third customer was exciting. Planning for the future gets me excited. Eventually, I want to be a household name when it comes to food and quality. My flavor sets me apart from the rest and I want to share it with everyone.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I know I have mentioned this competition a few times, but it was a lot of fun and a huge learning experience. I definitely didn’t expect to place in my first time participating with as many veteran people participating. But at the end of the day, my habanero salsa place 10th place and my BBQ sauce placed 24th. With over 50 participants, I will take that as a win.
