Meet Tiffany Matheson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Matheson.

Tiffany, before we jump into specific questions about your art, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Before becoming an artist, I worked in international business in the greater Manhattan area. While on the east coast, I attended the Center for Herbal Studies which prompted moving back home to Colorado to return to university with the intent of becoming a physician. Partway through my program, I took a sculpting course and was immediately hooked on the infinite creative possibilities, and as such, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biology with Studies in Sculpture from CU Denver. I am a mixed and multimedia artist specializing in sculpture, installation, performance, and public art. Since graduation, I have participated in multiple exhibitions, held residencies at the Museum of Outdoor Arts and the Children’s Museum of Denver and have installed work in various local municipalities. I am a Member at Pirate Contemporary Art and sit on the Creative Hub Collective at the Denver Art Museum.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
If all life’s roads were smooth, we’d be living a lackluster existence in perpetual plains; the hills and mountains are what bring variety and joy. Spending seven years in a familiar career and quitting to go back to college was not without struggle. I had to adjust from being a comfortably salaried employee to taking out student loans, deciding to pursue a career in the arts instead of continuing to medical school required adjusting my expectations as well. One of the most difficult challenges of being a working creative is figuring out how to monetize your skillset to make a living doing what you love. This path is unique for each individual, and traveling without a road map carries various navigational opportunities.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
I am an incredibly inquisitive dreamer with a deep love for discovery and exploration. Having a formal education in biology, I conceptualize as a scientist and generate work through the creative filter of an artist. Multisensory engagement has an immense impact on my interpretation of the world, resulting in the regular integration of sensational elements into my designs. Texture, color, light, sound, temperature, scent, vestibular perception and proprioception play important roles individually or in concert, inviting participation with interactive pieces or immersion into encompassing environments. I greatly enjoy inventing optical illusions and embedding hidden elements tucked away for the most curious to find.

While much of my work is strikingly colorful, playful and lighthearted, I occasionally create visceral, destructive, monochromatic pieces, and I appreciate working on projects that promote dialog around current social or environmental issues. I have experience with mold making and casting, woodworking, welding, textiles, acrylic manipulation, electronics, music, written word, and more. I find inspiration in observation, the botanical world, and outer space. My art is often based on geometry and mathematics, with emphasis given to precision and attention to detail. I am known for my ability to creatively problem-solve, drawing on a wealth of knowledge from my diverse life experiences and blended professional and educational backgrounds.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
If you have found joy, you have found success. For me, this means loving what I do, pursuing my passion, having an ever-changing variety of projects through which to express myself, and creating and sharing meaningful connections with others. It is always an added bonus when people appreciate experiencing your art and take away something meaningful.
