Meet Tim Hebert of HKS Builders Group in North

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Hebert.

Tim, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started in aviation 1992 and have worked throughout my career as a pilot, A&P Mechanic, Quality Inspector/Auditor and most recently as a consultant. Although I absolutely love aviation, I have always felt like I am a craftsman. Over the years, I have worked various construction projects. Some of which include remodeling homes, kitchens and bathrooms. I also really got into building custom poker tables for a while. In 2017 I was working for one of the largest global helicopter transport companies and decided I wanted to do something different. I wanted to get back to working with my hands and being creative. I partnered up with a friend of mine that had been in the construction industry for 20 years. He shared the same values I have about honesty and giving people quality product so we started HKS Builders Group. We work together each day and have been fortunate enough to make a difference in many people’s lives.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Aviation can be tough. While first starting out, I worked for a lot of companies that were startups and would be bankrupt in six months. It seemed like I was constantly starting over. I finally was hired with a local airline. Things seemed to be looking up and then the September 11th attacks hit. That was a very tough time for the aviation community. There is always ups and downs. (no pun intended) in this industry. In 2006 I was asked to help start up a sister airline. I took on that challenge. I was a leader in a certification team to obtain an Air Carrier certificate. We became a certified airline on December 7th, 2007 and flew 1.8 million passengers our first year with ten new aircraft. We were very successful and then the economy crashed in 2008. That was probably the most challenging time I had in aviation. Outside if that. I really wanted to believe that if I were to start up a construction company, I could make living working with my hands again. I was a bit nervous, leaving a great job to pursue something I felt I was being driven to do. I only had one customer lined up for about two months of work. I had to trust more jobs would come.

Please tell us about HKS Builders Group.
When we started HKS, Our mission was really focused on helping people. We wanted to provide a service that promoted good quality work, above and beyond the normal industry standard. We wanted to form lasting relationships with our customers and give them a pleasant experience throughout the project as well as a final product that they would love. By doing this, we have not had to do any advertising and rely only on word of mouth referrals. Each of our skill sets really complements each other so we can accomplish most jobs by ourselves.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have always loved bicycles and motorcycles. All I wanted to do was go fast. I loved racing. It was a perfect way to be right in the moment and had no other worries.
