Meet Tina Newton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Newton.

Tina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always enjoyed taking photos. But it wasn’t until I was gifted a DSLR camera for my birthday that photography really took hold of my heart. At first, I was just the “Mom-photographer” taking photos of my children, until one day a family at my church asked me if I would be willing to take their son’s senior photos. Since I didn’t have any form of editing software, that is how they paid me for the session. I started doing sessions for friends and family and slowly I started booking more sessions and with every session, my passion grew. Now, I own a studio downtown, I am a licensed and insured LLC, and I specialize in maternity and newborn photography.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all. I had no idea what I was doing at first. I have no idea what proper exposure was. I had no idea what any of the fancy buttons on my camera did, I didn’t even know how to use my camera off the auto setting. My editing skills consisted of most beginners, dark vignettes around the edges, over saturating the colors, and high contrast. my first newborn session was so awful I actually made the Mom cry because of how low quality the images were and how awful the posing was. It’s funny now, but looking back at all I have learned the last five years I’m thankful for the mistakes and struggles, they are humbling.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I started out doing all areas of photography. If someone needed photos, I did it. Even if I had no idea what to do. Over the last five years, I have shifted to specializing in maternity, birth and newborn photography. I enjoy working with families and children. Newborns especially. Beautiful images are created from the innocence of newborns, and the love and excitement from the new parents. I am most proud of the relationships I have built with my clients. Since my most popular package is a first year package where I take milestone photos throughout the first year of the baby’s life, I get to watch them grow and bond with them and their parents. I have made wonderful friends through this business. I would say my flexibility and willingness to customize my sessions for each client’s needs is what most people appreciate about me. I don’t think I am “known” for much, but I do know I am one of the few in my area to offer such a wide selection of outfits options for children a newborn-1 year and I have a wide variety of high-end maternity gowns my clients can choose from. I was referred to as “The Baby Lady” from my waitress at a restaurant though, so maybe I am more known for my newborn photos. I also am the only photographer (that I know of) to offer nude maternity sessions. Not the same a boudoir, but a studio based session to focus more on the pregnant body.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t know if I could credit luck for any good or bad that has happened. I am blessed to have very supportive friends and family that have helped me learn and have experiences to grow and strengthen my business.
