Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiny Tomboy.
So, before we jump into specific questions about your band, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Our band, Tiny Tomboy, started at Colorado College in 2019. Our members are Eliza Neiman-Golden (vocals and guitar); Sam Seymour (drums); Christian Olsen (bass); Quinn Jones (vocals and guitar); and Baxter Waltermire (guitar). Sam and Eliza first met in a songwriting class and started jamming. Quinn and Christian grew up playing in bands together and started at Colorado College the same year as Baxter.
We first came together as a band because Eliza’s RA asked her to be the musical guest on a fake late-night comedy show. Eliza asked Sam to play with her, and he brought along Christian, Quinn, and Baxter. We had strong musical chemistry, so we continued to play together. Once we started playing shows, we got invited to do a lot of gigs on campus. Even though COVID has temporarily stopped us from performing, we have been working on new music and plan to release an EP at the end of the summer. We are also very excited to reunite in the fall and play together again.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This past year, before COVID, we were playing shows practically every weekend. Many times we would learn about a show one or two days before it happened and have to scramble to lengthen our setlist, learning six or seven songs in one day. The cops shut down our last show before quarantine, and once COVID hit, it was a challenge to maintain the momentum we had generated. We couldn’t perform anymore, and quarantine made it difficult to collaborate on new material.
We’d love to hear more about your band.
We are a rock band based in Colorado Springs. Our shows are always loud and tend to get a little crazy. We’ve had crowd surfing, people falling onto us, microphones getting knocked over, and lots of dancing. For Juneteenth, we released our first song, “Someone Else,” on Bandcamp. With it, we raised $275 for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The Legal Defense Fund fights for racial justice through police reform, protecting affirmative action, and fighting housing discrimination, among many other things. We are proud to have supported this organization with our music and are also very proud of the song itself. “Someone Else” is a fan favorite during our live performances and is now out on Spotify and Apple Music.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I (Eliza) was always interested in things that are considered traditionally masculine. I played electric guitar, snowboarded, and my childhood best friend and I dressed in camo pants and homemade t-shirts with the word “Extreme” written on them in puffy paint. That’s where the “Tomboy” part of our name comes from. We are called Tiny Tomboy because I’m also extremely short, and alliteration is fun.
