Meet Traci and guy from Boom Inc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Traci Mitchell and Guy Mitchell.

Traci and Guy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Long story short, but Boom Sports was born over 10 years ago in October 2008 inside my parents’ child care facility Parker Landing Child Development Center. We both grew up playing sports, playing on the varsity teams in High School and we were youth soccer coaches in college at an indoor soccer facility. Guy is the soccer buff and I love basketball to my core. We now coach four days a week at various facilities in the Denver Metro Area (Parker Landing Child Development Center, Parker Fieldhouse, and South Suburban Sports Dome). We offer year-round instruction in soccer, basketball, flag-football and yoga to children ages 18 months – 10 years old, averaging around 300 kids a month.

We got married in 2013 and we purchased 35 acres of property on the prairie side a.k.a Agate, Colorado. We built a tiny house on it in 2015 and have been living @theboomstead is what we call it and occasionally with my parents in Lone Tree (when our pipes freeze/and water heater broke this Winter) Guy and I are permaculturists as well and we have big dreams of restoring this 35 acres by planting more trees, shrubs, etc. with permaculture principles in mind. To learn more about what we are doing on our homestead, we started a blog called aboomlife.com where we teach people how to homestead their own way. We also started boompermargadens.com in 2017– the plan with this company is to help people build and start their own backyard kitchen gardens. This company is a seasonal company for us and we started two years ago but only had two clients. One of the two is my parents preschool garden. Which is super fun and rewarding teaching preschoolers about where food comes from.

Now,  over ten years of coaching have led us to expand our dreams. We founded Mile High Micro Greens this past year and purchased our new Denver home and micro-farm this year in April 2019. We exclusively grow microgreens for Chefs, local Restaurants and Colorado Residents in hopes of bringing fresh high-quality affordable produce at every meal. Soon to add herbs and edible flowers. Has it been a smooth road?
More of a dirty, dusty, bumpy, road with hills.

Life always has challenges, it’s how you handle these challenges that matter.

For Instance,

Our first year in the tiny house, it was only 10′ x 12′, it is a two-story tiny house, with room for a queen bed and 2 dogs upstairs in the 8 ‘ x 5′ Master Bedroom. The total sq. ft. for the “F’ing Tiny House” (we don’t call it that anymore) was right under 150 sq. ft. We made it work and our downstairs included the kitchen, living room, home office, and our “Harry Potter” bathroom/shower is tucked right under the stairwell. We sat on dog beds and watched old movies on our computer and the first 3 seasons of “The Office” too many times to count as our entertainment since our internet would run out of data. Living out at @theboomstead in the tiny house is easy when the weather is warm beside the crazy windy days but it’s winter that tests your soul and spirit. We made it through our first winter with design plans to pop a wall out and add on a 12′ x 12’ Living Room and it was worth it!!! Bonus: I successfully self-published my first children’s book during the first winter @theboomstead called “The Mysterious ABC Seed” and we also plant a tree for every hardcopy and or ebook sold!

We have lots of challenges out @theboomstead but as Entrepreneurs, our biggest challenge so far with Boom Sports was trying to expand with new coaches in mind. We trained a coach for over 3 years but he took what he learned and parted ways and started his own youth sports company. That is what we are finding the most difficult part, keeping a good employee around and trusting him/her to be a high-energy employee that cares about Boom Sports just as much as we do.

The biggest challenge with Mile High Micro Greens has been educating the public and getting residents and restaurants to use way more of them. Consumers need to stop treating them as a garnish, these little micros are jammed packed with flavor and nutrients. Some even have up to 40x more vitamins than the full grown counterpart.

In the end, all of the challenges have been well worth it and it is what makes life a big booming adventure.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Boom Sports like I mentioned is a youth sports company that caters to ages 18 months – 10 years old. I am most proud to follow in my parents’ footsteps as entrepreneurs when My mom called us up and said: “Traci and Guy you are going to come down here once a week from Boulder and coach soccer to the daycare kids and call it “BOOM” because you say that all the time! She is a Genius and my father and she have been successfully operating Parker landing Child Development Center in Colorado for over 31 years!!!

I don’t see a daycare takeover but we are most proud to be successful entrepreneurs running our own Colorado-based business that helps kids learn about life through sports.

We follow non-GMO organic standards without the label to help on the overall costs of running a farm. Plus, we grow & cut to order the day of delivery.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, Denver is a great place for entrepreneurs to own their life and chase their dreams.
