Today we’d like to introduce you to Allegra Wermuth.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a professional violinist and have been teaching tweens and teens for the last 28 years. When I became a yoga teacher, I knew that working with this age group would be a priority for me, especially girls. Four years ago, I created Goddess Girls Yoga. It originally was just a summer workshop where I would introduce the girls not only to the physical practice of yoga, but also breathwork, using mantra and chanting with mythology and empowerment tools to boost their confidence. The workshop was very successful and continues to be now. Three years ago, I introduced “Create Your Own Mythology” into my offerings: the girls would learn about the Hindu Deities, their strengths and weaknesses, their tools or weapons, and their stories and lessons. At the end of the workshop, each girl would present their own Goddess through posters, stories, powerpoint presentations, however, they thought fit their expression best. These girls are creative, smart, witty and really understand the deeper concept of using kindness, compassion and abundance as tools or “weapons”, for example.
As my GGY have been getting older, they have begun to dig deep in trying to figure out what is most important to them. Two “spinoffs” have been created from these brainstorms: SEVA Warriors and PangeaTake2. SEVA Warriors is a summer workshop for independent service projects that the girls manifest and bring to life. They have done pretty amazing work with animal shelters and homeless women, to name a few. PangeaTake2 was created this fall, as a call to action to work on group and independent projects to help serve Mother Earth locally.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road and continues to have its struggles. Marketing and “hustling” (not a favorite word of mine) is key in creating these passion projects. I am not an advertising type of person by nature, so it is difficult for me to talk to myself or my workup. But then, I see how passionate these girls are to make a difference and that is just the inspiration I need.
Please tell us about Goddess Girls Yoga – what should we know?
I am a violinist, a yogi, a single mom, and a teacher. The main component of all these hats I wear is the teaching aspect. I love to work with tweens and teens, learn what makes them tick, what makes them open up and shut down. I think it is so important for these kids to have adult role models that are not their parents, to feel safe with and most importantly, heard. Sometimes I feel the lessons are often more therapy sessions than lessons learning how to play the violin, but they come out of each lesson with a clearer sense of self. In my GGY offerings, these girls get to be a part of a like-minded community, with compassion, kindness and service as priorities. These days, it’s imperative that our children are reminded about just how important these things are in our lives. That we are a part of a greater good, and that there is much more to live and the world than just ourselves.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I think the most important thing in this day and age is to use your voice. Stand up for what you believe in, and let your voice be heard. These days, people are listening to those who identify as women much more than ever before. We need to keep it up and never settle for being unheard of.
