Meet Trailblazer Amber Freed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Freed.

Amber, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am the proud mother of adorable twins named Maxwell and Riley. They are 2 years-old and love each other, Elmo and dogs. Maxwell was diagnosed with a rare neurological disease called SLC6A1 and we were told nothing could be do. I left my career at Janus to create my own miracle and have made astounding progress. I called hundreds of scientists and found his disease can be cured via gene replacement therapy. The therapy is now developed at the University of Texas and the only thing holding us back is money. We have raised $1,000,000 against our goal of $4,000,000 – $7,000,000 to hold a Phase 1 Clinical Trial.

Has it been a smooth road?
I essentially had to give myself a PhD in molecular biology overnight in order to become an expert in my son’s disease. I have never worked so hard to reach a goal in my life – but this is my son’s life at hand.

We’d love to hear more about Milestones For Maxwell.
Milestones for Maxwell is a non-profit dedicated to curing children of a rare neurological disease called SLC6A1. Children with rare diseases are often deemed “Too Rare to Care” by the medical and biotech communities. We give them a voice and fight for their lives.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
The parents that have come before me inspire me every day. Many lost their children before a treatment was developed and yet, they push forward for the next generation.
