Today we’d like to introduce you to Amelie Hubert.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Amelie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My path to art has been winding – partly because I am multi-passionate, and partly because of my own beliefs and blockages about my ability to make a living out of my passions. I grew up in Belgium where I got a Master in Psychology: I like helping people, and also everyone around me told me to “be responsible” and “get an education so you can have a good job to fall back on because most artists never make any money.” As far as I can remember, I’ve always secretly dreamed of being an artist, and at the same time doubted myself because I saw successful artists as a select few – a lot of my art had been kept private for that reason. But in my mid-twenties, I got tired of playing small and wanted to pursue my passions. I went on to study fashion design in Paris and drawing in San Francisco.
In San Francisco, I fell in love with this country (and with an American) – and after some back and forth, I got a green card and decided to stay. I feel like this “land of opportunity” has so much to uplift and inspire me: beautiful landscapes, bold entrepreneurs, and thriving local artists communities. That was 10 years ago and I still feel the same.
I had some times when I was a full-time artist, some time had a part-time or full-time job. I have been an art teacher for a paint and sip company, a model, a student advisor, a painter, a waitress, etc. I even lived in a converted van for 6 months and explored the West. There was a lot of adventure and a lot of challenges as well, but I know that if I keep making art, everything will eventually be okay.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! Admittedly, a lot was out of not knowing any better. I had to learn how to be an entrepreneur, manage money, promote my art (still working on that one!), as well as how things work in the US compared to Europe (spoiler: it’s quite different!).
The main challenge for me in this journey has been to not feel discouraged when something is not working as well or as fast as I want. For example, I remember registering for an outdoor art show, paying $500 in booth fees, setting up all on my own for 2 hours before the show, and then sitting there for 3 days, not selling a single thing. It was heart-crushing. Having people who believed in me and encouraged me to keep going was essential. One of the biggest lessons was, that in a society where a lot of people (me included) tend to feel entitled, it’s humbling to realize that people are not obligated to be interested in the stuff we make.
What made the biggest difference in my life has been spirituality and meditation. I’ve been studying and practicing for about 15 years now and it has helped me grow as a person as well as navigate the difficulties in life. I recommend 15 minutes of quiet meditation every morning, as well as journaling first thing in the morning (check out Julia Cameron’s The Artist Way for more on this life-saving practice). I think self-reflection is essential for all creatives and entrepreneurs, but especially for us young women: society has put so many ideas in our heads about who we should be, and it takes care and awareness to unravel all that and get to know our real self.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I create Sacred Geometry and spiritual art. Mostly acrylic on canvas, but also some fun things like cast resin medallions, coasters, stickers and prints.
The whole reason why I create this type of art is that I want to share the inspiration and joy I get from spirituality. I want my art to not only be beautiful but also bring high-frequency energy to your home. I bring “good vibes” through vibrant and harmonious art, and I also firmly believe in the healing energies you get from looking at sacred geometry and other spiritual themed paintings. I also paint Hindu deities: I have learned to know and love these mysterious deities like Ganesh, Lakshmi and Shiva and they are part of my spiritual practice. Therefore, I want to share my love and honor them the best I can.
I believe that what sets me apart from some others is the depth of my love and reverence for the deities and symbols I use in my art: I don’t do it because it’s “trendy”, I do it because it’s what is deep in my heart and what I interact with every day. In fact, I get most of my ideas for paintings from “visions” that come to me in meditation. When I make art, I create in silence or listening to mantras or other meditation music, to connect with the sacred in what I do. I take it quite seriously!
And at the same time, I don’t want to be “exclusive” or reserve my art to the advanced spiritual seeker: my whole point is to bring these “good vibes” to everyone that resonates with it: even if you only have $5 in your pocket or have never set foot in a meditation class. I have paintings for $500+, and also an Etsy shop with fun stickers and magnets for less than $5.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Be genuine and follow your intuition. I have found mentors when I was least expecting it and when I was just showing up authentically, with heart open, and without ulterior motives. I have met some amazing ladies that are giving back to younger, less experienced women and the exchange is mutually satisfying and beneficial.
It has worked well when I just showed up fully, with no expectations, and listened to my gut instinct when it came to who to talk to, what to ask and who to trust. All these ladies have become dear friends of mine, who introduced me to other badass ladies that have also become friends – and so on.
