Meet Trailblazer Angela Pawliski

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Pawliski.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was 17, I landed a job for a salon and spa and that’s when I knew that I wanted to be a hairstylist. Shortly after graduating high school, I moved to North Carolina and enrolled in Paul Mitchell the School Charlotte. I always knew I wanted to be an artist, but I wasn’t exactly sure what kind until I started doing hair. Being a Hairdresser gives me the opportunity to blend art and human connection into one, which today I realize has been my calling all along. After becoming licensed, I was eager and ready to start working at a salon and grow in my career.

But it was a lot harder then I anticipated. I quickly realized that I was only taught the basics in school and had so much to learn. Technically and from a business standpoint, I was just a newbie. I began working at a salon in Charlotte, that was driven by education and shaped me into the stylist I am today. I was mentored by the salon owner who challenged me and pushed me to be my best. I worked for that salon for seven years as a Master Stylist and Salon Manager until I followed my heart and relocated to Denver, CO in 2018 to begin my next adventure.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Obstacles and challenges are inevitable. As a new stylist, I think I struggled most with confidence in my skillset because I lacked the experience of more seasoned stylists.

My best advice is to find a mentor and stay open to learning. Having a clear vision of the kind of stylist you want to be and who want to help will guide you. This industry is saturated with online and in salon education, so be intentional to where you put your time and money. I believe if I’m for everyone, I’m for no one. That doesn’t mean putting yourself in a box either, just find what you love to do and get really good at it.

Moving to Colorado has probably been the most challenging part of my career so far. No one tells you how hard starting over and building a clientele truly is. Stay positive; find a salon that supports you; market yourself and make new connections everyday.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’d like to be known as someone who educates and empowers others. I love teaching my clients how to care for their own hair and bring out the natural beauty they already possess. I can give you a stellar haircut, but if you don’t know how to style it or which products you need to maintain your style, I haven’t done my job. The services I love to perform most are hair coloring and precision cutting. Anything from grey coverage and balayage to medium blunt bob and long, textured styles are my favorite.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Absolutely, women bring so much to the table, especially in the beauty industry. I believe it first starts with our mindset and how we perceive ourselves. We must always believe in our abilities and give the world that special thing only we have. Who cares if someone is already doing what you want to do. There is room for everyone to express their creativity and share their ideas with the world. The beauty industry brings so many opportunities, so many that I am blown away by how much there is. You can become a hairstylist, aesthetician, brow specialist, sales distributor, educator, makeup artist, owner, or brand ambassador and the list goes on. I feel we can do anything we set our minds to, everything is figureoutable but we must first believe we can, and we will.
