Meet Trailblazer April Aultman Wight

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Aultman Wight.

April, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I learned the basics of metals and jewelry at the Savannah College of Art and Design where I graduated with a BFA in Fine Art in 2004. Since graduation, I have refined my craft through self-exploration, apprenticeships, and various bench jeweler positions. I now work completely independently in my ever-expanding workshop, and sell 95% of my jewelry direct to consumer through my website and social media.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, the road is not always smooth, but it certainly is exciting. I see challenges and failures as my compass guiding me to true bliss. Without misfiring from time to time, I would not know when to change course. At the moment, disappointments can seem devastating, but you have to find the why and adjust accordingly. My favorite thing to do when I get discouraged is to look back and see how far I’ve come. I can honestly say I have never been happier and feel so blessed for every failure that has moved me to where I am today.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about April Aultman Jewelry – what should we know?
I independently create a constantly evolving line of one of a kind, handmade jewelry. As the sole buyer, designer, and fabricator of my brand, I offer a unique shopping experience that provides one on one connection between jeweler and buyer. My work is colorful and chic and fills the void between fast fashion costume jewelry and high-end couture. As I make each design, I carefully consider its wearability and durability. I only use solid silver and gold, and I select strong, rugged chains. Unlike the high polished jewelry seen in most stores, my work is often blackened and brushed to stand the tests of time. I have always led a very active lifestyle, and I strive to build jewelry made to be worn through all life’s adventures.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
The world is your oyster ladies! With the internet and social media, we can truly do it all. I am currently 30 weeks pregnant, and I am so proud to have built an independent business that allows me to work as much or as little as I like while still paying the bills. It’s my passion for the why (being a mom, making my own schedule, and never missing a powder day) that drove me to design the life I live today. Use that passion to your advantage, and if you want something, go out and get it!
