Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Taylor.
Ashley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My path was certainly not a linear one! I finished university and began working in sports marketing. From there, I opened a women’s shoe and accessories store and went on to work in the corporate world as a sales director. While I was working in sales, I missed small business ownership and wanted to build a business that served others. I had been a student of Pilates for years (after sustaining a neck injury in a car accident) and moved out of the corporate world to attend Pilates teacher training. What a change! I found myself entrenched in the world of anatomy, movement and learning all things Pilates and wellness. I completed the teacher training program and was ecstatic to be a Pilates Instructor. Nine years later, I am fortunate to share that passion through my studio, Taylor Pilates and Fitness, to mentor Pilates students, and to act as an OOV Educator. For me, every day is an opportunity to help people move well, feel well and live well by finding greater comfort in their body.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Oh boy, the road has been newly paved and almost undrivable!
The Smooth Road:
I was very fortunate that early on two people, Amanda Hodgson and Kathy Kummer, gave me my start in the Pilates world when they hired me as a newbie instructor. I offer mentorship and studio time to people going through Pilates teacher training because I am grateful for the opportunity given to me by Amanda and Kathy. I am also extremely fortunate that I met Amy Broekemeier, DPT when I was going through an advanced Pilates teacher training program seven years ago. Amy remains my mentor and has taught me so much about movement, anatomy and caring for others. I would not have the skill set that I have today without Amy’s mentorship.
The Bumpy Road:
The bumpy road has been all about space and location for me. Four years into teaching, the studio that I worked at was purchased by a fitness chain and the Pilates studio was replaced with tanning beds. Yes, those tanning beds – the kind known to cause skin cancer. I had three days to find another place to teach my clients. Then, three years later (about seven years into teaching), I was renting space inside a large Pilates studio and that space was sold necessitating another move in a highly competitive rental market.
Any advice for other women, particularly young women who are just starting their journey?
Whether you are just starting out or are established, find a mentor or several mentors to assist you along your journey. Be kind, inclusive, thoughtful, honest, and direct with everyone you encounter. Thank everyone who helps you along the way and when you have the opportunity to assist others do so.
