Today we’d like to introduce you to Breann Colpitts.
Breann, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It’s hard to decide how far back to go… my official career as a school psychologist is what brought me to Colorado. I worked in public schools for a decade before becoming a mom and thinking outside the box about what “having a job” had to look like. I had a colleague who I partnered with to do social learning groups for her students (she was a special education teacher) and we became friends and dreamed about doing social learning groups outside of the school setting. As it turns out, schools did not consider social learning to be a priority and we knew, both intuitively and intellectually, that was upside down… but it’s not measured on a test, so you see how that plays out. Not on the test, not valuable. Fast forward a couple of years, I left the school where I met my friend and moved to a day treatment setting. The stress was intense and after becoming pregnant, I decided (along with my friend- who also happened to be pregnant) to leave the schools and create our own social learning practice together. Our daydream turned into a reality and we took the leap and left security for the entrepreneur life. Successfully Social was born. Our mission was to create a community for quirky kids- those kids on the fringe who didn’t have the skills to engage meaningfully with their peers- those were our people (and still are). We know, both from the research and from our own lives, that being connected to other humans is critical for a healthy and happy life. So, removing barriers for our clients so they can choose to connect with others is the crux of our work. My friend and former business partner has since moved closer to family in New England and is opening a sister clinic out east. I’ve been doing social coaching as a solopreneur for three years. I love what I do!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
A smooth road, what is that exactly? LOL. I’ve experienced many struggles… everything from knowing my value and believing in what I have to offer from staying current with social media best practices and figuring out the best way to get the word out about the unique services I offer. My advice is to ask for help! Don’t waste time trying to figure everything out yourself. Find someone to mastermind with- being able to workshop ideas is super helpful. And be mindful of your community impact, don’t overlook that side of your business.
We’d love to hear more about Successfully Social Colorado.
I’m a social coach for quirky kids. I offer social groups, private social coaching, intentional parent community, and I recently started offering holistic gut-brain axis support after some deep diving into microbiome science. Social coaching focuses on the thinking behind the doing- so it’s much more than “social skills” groups. It’s teaching kids to be observers of the world and of themselves- developing both social and self-awareness. At the core, it’s rewiring brains, which can be slow going, but SO rewarding when things start to click. I think what sets Successfully Social apart from others is that we become like family when working closely together- a true community is built and it’s so impactful. When your kid goes from never being invited to birthday parties to receiving social invitations; that’s a game-changer. And being part of that ripple effect is what it’s all about.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
I’ve been inspired by many women in my life. First and foremost, my Mom has been an inspiration for me. She went back to school when my sisters and I were in elementary school. She chipped away at earning her associates degree, then her bachelors, and finally her masters. She is a teacher and has positively impacted so many lives. She often has students come back and tell her how much she meant to them as a role model. Additionally, my maternal grandma has always pushed herself to reach for more. She was a teacher, then an entrepreneur- she had a women’s clothing store. She has taught me so much- from fractions and diagraming sentences to following your dreams and going after goals. She also strong-armed me into giving a speech at my high school graduation. No regrets.
