Meet Trailblazer Bridget Burnett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bridget Burnett.

Bridget, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was younger, I had an incredible desire to be creative. In high-school all of my friends could either draw or paint and to be honest with you, I have absolutely zero skill in that realm. One day, I was sitting at a park near my house in Boise, Idaho and I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, what I am seeing right now almost looks like a painting. If I could take a photo of this- it would be my version of art!” I asked for a camera that Christmas and I have been taking photos ever since. I later attended the University of Colorado, Boulder and studied photography. Since then, I have moved down to Denver to pursue my career full-time.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think it is very difficult to find a smooth road nowadays, but it is the bumps in the road the make you grow. Honestly, some of the biggest struggles I have had in my career so far have been doubting my work and myself. In an age of social media, it is very difficult to not constantly compare yourself to others. There are so many amazing photographers out there and while I do find a lot of their work inspiring, I also find myself feeling like I am lacking creativity. My advice there would be to constantly create, in my case, I will go out and find models or couples to photograph even if it’s just for fun. Along the same line, something that I have found that helps me is surrounding yourself with people that are going to bring you up. Those people continue to inspire me every day!

The advice I would give to young female photographers is to believe in yourself. Photography can be a male-dominated industry, but you just have to put the trust in yourself and know that you and your work are worth it. Never be afraid to show what you’re made out of!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I focus my photography on weddings, concerts, fashion/portraiture, corporate, and editorial/lifestyle. I absolutely love that I have so many focal points to my work and that they are all so different. I constantly feel refreshed with each shoot that I do! I think in turn this sets me apart from others. I have experience in shooting in all kinds of scenarios. From concerts at Red Rocks to mountain weddings to fashion shows, I have shot it all! As for what I am known for and what I am most proud of, I would say weddings, concerts, and portraiture. I adore working with couples and building a relationship with them outside of a shoot. While photographing, concerts fills me with a rush of adrenaline I didn’t even know existed. And lastly, I love how versatile photographing portraits and working with models can be! As well as owning my own business, I am a photographer for 303 Magazine, which is where I do a majority of my concert, editorial, and fashion work. So, I guess you could say I am known for that too!

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Keep creating. Meet as many people as possible. Believe in yourself.
