Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Rezmovits.
Carla, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was always that girl in high school that did my friend’s hair and makeup for dances and senior pictures. I loved doing it, but it took me a long time to decide I wanted to make a career out of it.
I worked as an admin assistant for years before I finally took the plunge and went to cosmetology school. Once I was in school, I truly felt like it was what I was supposed to be doing.
I worked for several years in a corporately owned salon before I decided to branch off on my own. In addition to doing cuts and colors, I started subcontracting with a company that does hair and makeup for weddings. I realized quickly that while I enjoy cutting and coloring, my heart belongs to wedding hair. I love to do updos and formal styles.
My family decided to relocate to the Colorado Springs area at the beginning of this year and I decided it was time to switch gears and focus on formal styles and makeup.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like any woman trying to find balance between work and family, it’s a juggling routine until you find your stride.
Not too long after I ventured out on my own, I found out I was pregnant. I had plans for what to do after my baby was here. I was looking for a partner to share my space. But life has it’s own path for you to follow. My daughter was born early and has medical issues. She spent a long time in the NICU. It was a hard decision to make but I eventually had to tell my clients I wasn’t coming back.
I’m lucky enough to still keep in contact with many of my former clients and have received some referrals for wedding clients.
Please tell us about Bombshell Beauty – what should we know?
Updos and formal styles are my passion. I love a soft romantic updo or a thick braided style but retro styles seem to be where I shine. I’ve always had a love for Old Hollywood and Vintage hair and makeup. I really started to learn to do many of those styles even before I went to cosmetology school. I even had a victory roll style I did on myself for my own wedding.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
So many industries were pioneered by men. The beauty industry is luckily one of those industries that has evened out, if not tipped the scales on being more accepting to women being in the limelight and being in charge. This industry is so full of artists and I love to see when we support each other. I hate hearing other stylists bash another’s work. We as women, should always try to lift each other up.
