Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Martinez.
Christina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my career journey at a door manufacturer. I interned for them while I was going to school at CU Boulder to get a degree in business with a double emphasis in Marketing and HR. I never thought I’d stay in the building industry, but here I am ten years later! I worked for the Door manufacturer for 5.5 years, where I focused on working with Architects and designers in focus groups and educational settings. Then, I joined my current company in the commercial roofing division, where I ran our Marketing communications team, focusing on communicating to contractors. After three years there, I promoted into the role of Retail Marketing Manager for our Insulation division, where I collaborate with the teams at Lowes, Home Depot, and other retailers. In this role, I work to help with the end-users project planning that takes place online, their in-store experience, all the way through providing how-to guides and post-care for their projects.
Being around building products has made me take on some of my own projects now and has given me the confidence to try to tackle some things I previously wouldn’t. I’m a DIYer when it comes to home projects and fixes, and most recently, I have started to revive a 68 Dodge van. You can see my van build-out and restoration on Instagram @Rustic Roaming.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest thing I encountered early on in my career was proving myself as a young woman. A lot of the dealers and contractors I was interacting with were seasoned in their field and more familiar with interacting with men. I hear a lot about women having a hard time in men dominated industries, but I felt even more pressure from feeling perceived as young and inexperienced. My advice to young women would be to hold your head high and trust yourself! I think back on so many times where I just needed to trust my intuition and training and wish I was more confident with my customers because I did know what I was doing and in some cases, I was performing better than my peers.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I build brand stories and connect with our users. I am known for being detail-oriented and creating a cohesive tone and feel. My role is to help homeowners navigate building projects and save energy in their homes and in turn money.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I love podcasts! I listen to lots of content put out by Wondery for entertainment and I listen to The Daily by the New York Times every morning to keep up to date on the news. I also love my acorns app that forces me to save a few dollars here and there and am a big fan of my smart home toys. I have my lights connected to my alarm which has been my favorite smart home addition and ensures that I make it up for my 5 am workouts!
